Murray defeats Ito in opening match in Paris

Britain’s Andy Murray overcame Tatsuma Ito of Japan in the first round of the 2012 Roland Garros, beating him in straight sets 6-1  7-5  6-0 after 1 hour and 35 minutes.

Murray got off to a superb start, taking the first set in just 25 minutes. After he broke Ito at the beginning of the second set, the match looked done and dusted. But the Brit took his eyes off the ball for a moment and let the Japanese right back into the set. The key moment came in the 9th game, when Murray managed to save 3 break points at 0-40 down and hold serve. That seemed to have broken Ito, who couldn’t maintain Murray’s pace and the Brit sailed to a comfortable victory.

In round two, Murray will play Jarkko Nieminen of Finland after his opponent Igor Andreev retired when trailing 3-6  6-2  2-1.

Results the other first round matches – Argentine Juan Monaco eliminated French wild card holder Guillaume Rufin 6-2  2-6  6-2  7-6 (3), Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus booked his place in the second round after dismissing the Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 6-3  6-3  6-1 and Argentine qualifier Eduardo Schwank defeated the big serving Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 6-4  6-0  6-3.
