5th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and 9th seed Juan Martin del Potro won their first round matches at this year’s Roland Garros.

Frenchman Tsonga came back from a set down to beat Russian qualifier Andrey Kuznetsov, winning 1-6  6-3  6-2  6-4.

Tsonga said last week that no Frenchman could win this year’s French Open, but he still believes he has got a chance to achieve a good result.

Argentine Del Potro also dropped a set on his way to a 6-2  6-7 (5)  6-2  6-1 victory over Albert Montanes of Spain. They have also met at this year’s Estoril Open, where the Argentine prevailed and went on to win the title.

The sweltering heat was causing problems for both players, the Argentine calling for a medical time-out twice in the second set. He also overcame a knee injury scare at the end of set 2.

Del Potro’s best result at the French Open came in 2009, when he reached the semifinal.
