6th seeded Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic wasted little time on his way to a 6-1  6-1 victory over the no.12 seed Frenchman Gael Monfils, cruising into the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrid Open.

The Czech took control of the match from the very beginning with an early break and then took Monfils’ serve in the 6th game just before serving out the set.

Monfils couldn’t find any answers to the big hitting Berdych’ s game and the Czech eased to a comfortable two sets win in just 50 minutes.

In the quarterfinal, Berdych will play the winner of the match between two Spaniards, Nadal and Verdasco.

Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine upset the 4th seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France after winning in three sets 7-5  3-6  7-6 (2).

Tsonga took a quick 4-1 lead in the first set, just before being broken back and then dropping serve once more in the 11th game. Dolgopolov went 0-30 down when serving for the set, but managed to hold in the end to take a lead in the match.

The Frenchman stepped up a gear in set 2 and his moment came in the 8th game, when he took Dolgopolov’s serve and subsequently consolidated the break to force a decider.

There were four breaks of serve in the first five games of the deciding set, but then both players held their serve and the tiebreak was to decide the faith of the match. Tsonga appeared to hurt his back going into the tiebreak and it showed in his limited ability to move. Dolgopolov took his chances in the breaker and with a 7-2 win he set up a clash against Argentine Del Potro, who defeated Croatian Marin Cilic 6-2  6-4.
