Fourth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga celebrated his birthday in the best possible way. The Frenchman won his second round match against the German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2  6-4 and joined Murray in round 3, who overcame Viktor Troicki.

Tsonga averted two break points in the 3rd game before taking Kohlschreiber’s serve in game six. After consolidating the break, he broke his opponent once more to go one set up.

Both players had their opportunities to break in the second set (Kohlschreiber in the 2nd, Tsonga in the 7th game), but couldn’t capitalise. It was the Frenchman once again who took the German’s serve at 5-4 up and sailed to victory.

Tsonga will play Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in round 3, who beat the Croatian Ivan Dodig 3-6  6-3  6-1.

From the first round matches, Stanislas Wawrinka booked his place in the next round as he defeated the 10th seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-1  6-4.

The Swiss eased through the first set, dropping just one game.

Lopez made him work a bit harder in set 2, despite going a break down early on. But as he couldn’t take Wawrinka’s serve to get back into the set, the Swiss set up a second round clash against the winner of the match between Pablo Andujar and Federico Delbonis.
