Top seed Rafael Nadal went out in the third round of the Shanghai Masters, losing to the German Florian Mayer 6-7 (5), 3-6.
World no.23 Mayer was full of joy after outsing the Spaniard: “It’s a really nice feeling. He’s such a great competitor on court. Yeah, for sure it is the biggest win in my career.”
Nadal saved two setpoints in the first set at 5-4 to Mayer, but it was the German who closed the set out in the end.
Mayer managed to take Nadal’s serve twice in the second set, breaking him at 5-3 to claim the “biggest win of his career” as he said after the match.
With this defeat, Nadal lost his chances to top Serbia’s Djokovic in the rankings till the end of this year and it will be the Serb who will finish the season as world no.1.
