Lleyton Hewitt, the former nr.1 player, now ranked 165th, was eliminated in his first round match as      he lost against the Slovenian Blaz Kavcic 6-4, 7-6 (3). For Kavcic, this was the biggest win of his career so far. Hewitt, who has been suffering from a foot injury, had to pull out of the next weeks US Open, where he’s been granted a wildcard.

Jurgen Melzer is yet to win a match in the North American summer hardcourt season. He went out in the second round to the Russian Igor Andreev 7-5, 6-3. Currently ranked 18th in the ATP rankings, the Austrian never really managed to get to the top of his game and Andreev certainly didn’t make it any easier for him as he came up with some impressive serving.

The French Open semi-finalist Melzer, who had to retire from last week tournament in Cincinnati due to injury, will hope for speedy recovery and get some solid practice in ahead of the US Open.

In another second round match, the 8th seed Baghdatis beat American Ryan Sweeting 7-5, 6-1.
