Serena Williams (Player Profile) hired Patrick Mouratoglou as a coach last year, after suffering a first round defeat to Virginie Razzano at the French Open.
Since then, things are looking up for Serena, who has managed to bag 13 tour titles, losing only 5 matches out of the 101 played. The breathtaking quarter-final performance against Carla Suarez-Navarro (6-0 6-0) just undermined her role as the favorite at this year’s Flushing Meadows.
Outside the tennis courts, it is rumoured that Frenchman Mouratoglou, whos is 43, is more than just a coach to Williams. Although both have declined to comment on their relationship, they have been seen holding hands in public, which would suggest that there is some intimacy going on between them.
At the age of 31 (turns 32 Sept 26th), Serena’s passion for the game is stronger than ever: “She’s working like she’s 19 years old and wants to win her first Grand Slam. She has the same appetite.” revealed Mouratoglou.
With 16 Grand Slam titles, Serena is only two away from equalling Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert’s 18. Steffi Graf leads with 22 Major wins.
