As the saying goes, behind every great man there is a great woman and for David Ferrer this woman is long term girlfriend Marta Tornel. Tornel always offers great support to the Spaniard without seeming to enjoy the spotlight or court the cameras but will undoubtedly be present to watch her man take on Rafael Nadal in his maiden Grand Slam final at the French Open this weekend.
Ferrer and Tornel were introduced by a combination of Ferrer’s coach Javier Piles and his wife, who is a close personal friend of Tornel’s. Marta Tornel has a degree in optometry and when she is back in her home town of Benafaio she works in her family’s opticians.
When she does follow Ferrer to tournaments Tornel very rarely makes public appearances or talks to the press, but did most notably appear in front of the cameras to celebrate with her man after Ferrer won a masters 1000 title in Paris.
The future appears to be bright for the couple, with Ferrer once referring to his girlfriend as ‘his future wife’ in a media interview after a tournament in Valencia and if they are to have a lasting relationship it will undoubtedly help that she does not bask in the media spotlight.
So, if Ferrer manages to pull off a stunning victory over Rafael Nadal in the final of the French Open perhaps his acceptance speech might be the perfect time for the Spaniard to pop the question to Tornel and set a date for a long anticipated wedding.
