Andy Murray certainly put his fans and supporters through the ringer with his epic five set victory over Fernando Verdasco in the Wimbledon 2013 quarter finals on Wednesday, and no one would have felt the strain more than his long term girlfriend Kim Sears. Sears is an ever present at all of Murray’s matches, home and abroad but has hardly ever been seen to be more involved in a match up than she was at centre court on Wednesday.
Kim Sears grew up as the daughter of tennis coach father, Nigel and South African mother Leonore in Barcombe, West Sussex. Her father went on to become the president of the women’s section of the Lawn Tennis Association in England, and it was through this connection to the game that she came to meet Andy Murray. This first meeting occurred at a US Open party in 2005, when Sears was travelling with her father and Murray was a young player making his way in the game. At the start the young couple kept their relationship a secret and Sears continued to study for her A-levels in Music, Art and Drama.
Sears was still at sixth form when her budding romance with the Scottish tennis ace came to the media’s attention back in 2006. The young student was supporting Murray at a tournament in San Jose, California, which the Scot went on to win to claim his first ever title. Following this maiden victory, Murray rushed through the crowds to plant a kiss on Sears and throw their relationship into the full glare of the world’s press. This sudden attention posed an immediate problem for Sears who having taken some unofficial time off from school to be in California, found herself on the front pages and with some explaining to do to her teachers. The Sussex beauty reminisces that ‘I went away with him thinking it’s fine because he’s never going to win so I’ll be back in time for school on Monday and then he did!’ Despite this cheeky leave of absence, Sears excelled at school and eventually claimed straight A’s in all of her subjects helping her to claim a place at the University of Sussex to study English Literature.
The couple’s relationship went from strength to strength in the early years, with Sears becoming an integral part of ‘Team Murray’, following her man around the tour and even striking up a friendship with Murray’s mum Judy, who once described Kim as ‘the best thing that ever happened’ to her son. The couple moved into a £5 million pound, six bedroom house in Oxshott, Surrey in 2009 but their relationship soon hit a rough patch leading Sears to move out and the pair to have a six month break from their relationship.
June 2010 saw the pair reconcile however, and since then they have hardly looked back, Murray’s tennis has gone from strength to strength and Sear’s support from the stands has been unwavering. Murray has been quick to point out that Sears has no interest in being a perennial WAG, however, stating that ‘she doesn’t want to follow me around on tour’ and has dreams of her own. Currently Sears is enjoying a growing reputation as an artist, painting pet portraits for wealthy clients while she also has aspirations of cultivating an acting career.
Whatever their plans for the long term, Murray and Sears will be hoping to have something to celebrate come Sunday, if the Scot can overcome Jerzy Janowicz and Novak Djokovic and claim his first Wimbledon title under the watchful eye of Sears who will be in the players’ box for every single point.
