If he's in the alternates list, presumably he must have a WC into the US Open Main Draw either that or he's not playing US Open qualies as he certainly has a high enough entry ranking to make US Open qualies draw.

I don't think they've announced anything for the USO Wildcards yet (specially since the entry list isn't even closed and there are some Americans who I would think would get a WC over Andy Murray), so maybe he just entered the New Haven alt list to play it safe so that he can get some matches in case he gets a WC but he can easily pull out if he decides to play USO qualies

I hadn't thought about that possibility until now, but it would be unusual for the USTA to give a wild card to a non-American. Except for the reciprocal arrangement between the Australians & the French, it's rare for any of the slams to give a wild card to a non-countryman. (Wimbledon has awarded a few to former champions/finalists like Ivanesicvic & Phillippoussis & gave one to half-British James Blake this year, but those are rare exceptions).

Here are the U.S. Open wild cards awarded to non-Americans in the last ten years:

2002: Amritraj, P. (IND)/2002 Boys 18 National champion (Kalamazoo)
1997: Rake, R. (PER)/1997 Boys 18 National champion (Kalamazoo)
1997: Smith, L. (AUS)/1997 NCAA champion
1995: Sargsian, S. (ARM)/1995 NCAA champion

The winner of Kalamazoo automatically earns a wild card & the reigning NCAA champion also earned an automatic wild card (up until foreign players started dominating college tennis & the USTA discontinued that policy).

It's also possible that Murray is so far down on the alternate list (I'm guessing that there are a few more players between Sargisian & Murray on the complete alternate list), he won't get in to New Haven & will still be able to play qualifying at the U.S. Open.

Yes Fiona, a player who loses in the New Haven qualies can still play the USO qualies, even if they qualify for New Haven and loses in the first round on the monday they can play the USO qualies IF the USO qualies start on the tuesday! Go Gambill...

It´s the usual one tournament per week rule, so Gambill will not be able to play any challengers in week 35 if he plays USO qualies and lose!

Right, but I wasn't worried about the challengers, just the whole New Haven-USO qualies thing. Of course, he has to get through the New Haven qualies in the first place which I have my doubts about anyway.

It does seem odd considering the number of direct entrants (& the fact that the other 48 main draw events in the U.S. have been using 32 qualifying draws--with four qualifiers--this year).

Gasquet has a recurrent tendinitis. We're all praying for it not to be too serious. He was not "just fine" this past week. Did you see his "match" against Ancic?

I did not see Gasquet's match against Ancic. I have to say though that there were several what you call "matches" (by which I presume you mean that one play didn't seem to be himself and was beaten) and not all of those seemed to be injury related. I did see Gasquet on the practice court a couple of times and his hitting didn't seem to be compromised, but he is a new player to me so I'll be the first to admit that I didn't know anything about him having recurring tendonitis. Which tendon?
Of course I hope for his health and safety, as I do for all the players.
They work so hard.
