Benneteau would not need a wildcard anyway, because he is right now NEXT-IN and will make it in directly with the next main draw withdrawal .. Only two WD from the main draw so far, and we know of more players who are candidatest owithdraw ... So I suppose Benneteau's wildcard, and possibly Monfil's, Clement's and even Simon's (they are currently #3, #4 and #9 in the waiting list for main draw) could all be used for other players later.

The problem is that the main draw players may not withdraw by the coming monday when the qualies draw has to be made though. So the FFT would need to waste their wildcards on these 3 or 4 players who could have helped other french players by being some 3 or 4 spots up the ranks! .. That is OK by me, because I generally do not like the idea of USA, GBR, AUS and FRA players getting all this unncessary help from the grand slams

As for the question on the final cut for qualies, I would expect it to to fall closer to #275 - and perhaps drop really fast below that on Monday. This is because a lot of players below #260 have entered the challengers next week and are not really candidates for the draw; they are allowed to play the RG qualies if they have lost their challenger first round match by monday evening and tell ATP that they can get to RG by at least wednesday - but most would not be able to play RG Q .. Don't be surprised if the cut inches down to about #270 by monday and then the next 2 or 3 spots forcing the cut from 270 to 290 or 300 ...

In other words, there is no crystal ball on this, as said above!

Rick Leach is in the qualies?? .. What the heck is he doing? .. After seemingly finishing his singles career at the age of 30 in 1994, he waited for 8 years and then played singles qualies at Hong Kong in 2002. Waited for two years and played qualies at Shanghai last year .. Now, at the ripe young age of 40, he is playing singles yet again?? ..

I remember seeing that he was retiring from even doubles about 5 years back. I believe he actually did, for oh, like a couple of days .. Then somebody asked him to be a partner for just one more year .. Next thing you know Rick was back on court and he was again in the top-20 .. Well he is STILL playing and ranked around top-50 in doubles .. Now he wants to play singles. Man, he must just love playing tennis. I respect the guy. Great player.

Maybe he signs in for singles qualies every week he's playing doubles & this was one of the few times that he was able to get in. Except for the Bryans, I think a lot of the so-called "doubles specialists" try to play singles when they can get in.

Leach likes watching tennis too. I've seen him sitting in the stands watching a few of his sister-in-law's matches this year as well.

Jim Thomas is also playing the singles qualies in St Poelten this week. Always get a smile seeing the doubles guys in the qualies. A bunch of them did it a few weeks ago, I think it was the Bermuda Challenger, and Jordan Kerr almost made it in.

Rick actually did retire from the tour to coach Lindsay in 2003, but that only lasted a few months and he went back on the tour again. He is enjoying it, for the most part. I'd be willing to bet that he picks up coaching again when he is finally done playing for real. Lot of tennis in the Leach bloodlines. (He and I kind of became 'friends' at the 2004 San Jose tournament, happy to see him playing with Travis Parrott these days).

There is no qualifying in doubles. No early entry list either. The top players show up and sign in for the main draw over the weekend (by monday or so). The draw should be out early next week.

It is a crime that they do not do qualies at three of the grand slams for doubles (ONLY Wimbledon still does it), not to mention ATP not allowing at ALL the ATP events. The top-75 club in doubles does not want anybody to move into their exclusive club. It is just not possible to do it anymore it seems, barring help from wildcards or help from top doubles players who pick you up and groom you. Moving up from about 125 to inside 75 is virtually impossible to do now on the ATP tour in doubles.

I think the whole doubles thing stinks! Personally I hate watching singles players trying to pretend to play doubles - they really don't like it, aren't a team, & are forced into it. True doubles teams are awesome to watch. There should be some way to promote it better - aren't there any rich old people out there who could lend a hand to promoting it better than the ATP (who basically does everything to kill it)?
