Well it's that time of year again. Time to discuss who we would like to see on the 2009 version of the Young Guns list.

A reminder, tier I is pretty much set. It's all those who were in tier II this year minus anyone who was born in 1988. The only one who falls into that category is Dusan Lojda.

So the discussion is for the newbies for tier II. (A reminder: the tiers don't represent level of ability, simply the years they have been on the list: tier II is for those who are in their first year, tier I is for the second...the maximum is 2 years).

Those eligible are players born in 1989 or later.

I would suggest Henri Kontinen, Grigor Dimitrov and Tsung Hua-Yang.

Out of the 1989 bunch, I think Brydan Klein (AUS) would be a good choice. He was born in December and already ranked at #256, which is higher than McClune, Klizan, Jones and Gojowczyk all are at the moment. He was also AO junior champ last year.

Jerzy Janowicz (POL) should definitely be in, b. Nov-1990, ranked inside the top 350 already with wins over experienced players such as Mahut, Mirnyi and Vanek.

There are also two Russians born in 1990 who seem to have a lot of potential. Ilya Belyaev is the only one his age inside the top 400 apart from Janowicz and Eysseric. Evgeny Donskoy is inside the top 500 with wins over Galvani, Korolev, Economidis and Udomchoke.

From the 1991 bunch the most promising so far is Grigor Dimitrov (BUL), the only one his year inside the top 500, with good results in the strong Spanish futures circuit, and Wimbledon and USO junior titles.

Jerzy Janowicz, 13-Nov-90. Already reached the semifinal of a Polish challenger.

Grigor Dimitrov, 6-May-91. Won juniors Wimbledon, US Open. Reached quarterfinals of juniors Roland Garros. Won 3 Spanish futures. However, made big losses in Challenger circuit.

Bernard Tomic, 21-Oct-92. Very young, but already with very big professional sponsorcontracts. Reached the final of a future in Indonesia.

Filip Krajinovic, 27-Feb-92. Reached the semifinal of Wimbledon (as a qualifier) and juniors US Open. Reached semifinal of the challenger in Knoxville (def. Robert Kendrick in first round)

I would include three guys who got hot this year, completely under the radar:

Roman Jebavy, (16 Nov 1989), from the Czech republic, just completed his first year as a pro and is already number 427, winning one future and being a finalist in two others. Finished better than big prospects, like Berankis. I saw this guy playing here in Brazil at the Gerdau Cup Juniors, he was the number 1 seed and lost in second round...I didn't thought he would be good, but he proved me wrong.

Marcelo Demoliner, (18 Jan 1989), from Brazil, is number 429, and I don't think that he had a good junior career. But he won two futures in Brazil and was a semifinalist in five others. He is also a strong doubles players, having won 5 finals out of 8 in futures.

David Goffin, from Belgium, is also having a good first pro year. He wasn't that good in juniors, but has already won a future title, was a finalist in other and has 3 more semifinals to his name. Plus, he just completed 18 years in Dec 7.

To new tier I it's not necessary to include Michael McClune, Martin Klizan and Greg Jones who have not improve their rankings during 2008.

Klizan have been injured, didn't play from June to October and it seems he is still fighting against injury, since he retired in his last match. Anyway, I was expecting more from him when he was fit.

I vote for Guido Pella. During 2008 year he played both as junior and futures and some challengers. In jr. he won the Bonfiglio cup and was RG SF (from qualies). He also won his first challenger match. One important thing to mention is that he did not received any wc thorugh all the year as he is against the AAT.
As next year he will stop playing junior tournaments it is very probable that he will improve his ranking much more.

Another good Arg player to consider is 1991 Nicolas Pastor but in my opinion the one that is more promissing is 1992 Agustion Vellotti but he is not playing too many pro tournaments.

i think one player that hasnt rated a mention at all and should be considered is john millman. he has moved 898 spots up the atp rankings in a year from 1461 to 563. he is born in 89 and is his first full year on the tour. prior to this he had only played 4 main draw futures singles matches for 1 win and a limited itf junior schedule of 14 events in 4 years. till this year he had never played an event on any surface other than hardcourt. although he does have a win under his belt over richardis berankis in the 2007 optus nottinghill ( oz open juniors lead in event ). he has produced some decent results in the last 3 months on the australian futures circuit winning his first title in this time. he is improving year after year and looks to have a good future in the game

Also lots of votes for 92s Filip Krajinovic and Bernard Tomic. But I think we'll give them and other 92s like Bhambri and Miccini another year. I'm also inclined to add Brydan Klein. I think Lopez would be a good choice too among the 89s. That gives us 9 with an option to add one more. I'd have no problem making a change or two in the first month. I think we can add one more given Klein and Lopez will only be there for one year.

And our Tier I's are off to a stellar 0-4 start to 2009. :lol:

I agree that Jones and McClune had disappointing 2008 years but at least they had winning records.

We'll give them another chance for 2009. Same with Klizan who has been fighting injury. Hopefully he can be healthy this year.

Henri Kontinen is back on court at last and could start his tennis training. It takes at least some weeks before he can play in tournaments.

No US-players in new Young Guns??? Should be at least one I think - but who?

Krajinovic qualifies for another challenger.

I don't see any reasons why not to add these players to the young guns. (both '92 players have a better ranking than '89-er Lopez after this week)

Yes, was just thinking that. We have room for one more and I am strongly considering Rhyne Williams (1991). He's off to a good start, too.

Yes. I have same opinion. Tomic, Krajinovic and Williams all are more interesting players to follow than Lopez.

I wouldn't expect much from Harrison this year. He hurt his back/neck this fall and was in a brace for awhile. He will be good in the future.

One guy not mentioned who I think has some potential is GARANGANGA, Takanyi (ZIM). He's only 18 and hasn't had great results, but I saw him play Kontinen at the Open juniors and he has some talent.

I completely agree. If they continue to play this year like thay have started, both will probably enter top 200 by the end of year.
After that there will be no need to track their results in young guns section. They will be all over the place.

Young Gun 2009 candidate Henri Kontinen plans at last start his season in Croatia F2 Future in Zagreb starting 16 Feb 2009.

Henri has 3 Junior Exempts to $15K future main draws in 2009. So he probably will use first JE in Croatia.
The following weekend Henri plans to play in Wolsburg challenger quallies.
