I am starting to think there is something wrong with Jerome Haehnel.

The guy was fighting since 1998 at Future level and broke trough last year, winning Metz ATP and reaching ATP#80. And now that he has the opprtunity to play at ATP level, he prefers to go to a 25k+h in Italy instead of entering Hamburg qualies. He already renounced to play Indian Wells, Miami (he was DA) and Barcelona (would have been DA).

He should keep 25k challengers for time he will be out of top 200...

His fear of flying doesn't explain everything...

He was also thinking about retiring the week before his success in Metz, even if he had played his best season so far in 2004.

A very strange case.

I'm also wondering what Haehnel is thinking with all these small tourneys. He doesn't even do well in those (at least not this year). He did play in Barcelona but lost easily in the first round. For next week he's on the alternate lists of both Munich and Estoril so I really hope he goes to either tourney.

Jerome Haehnel is just back from an injury, he is fighting to reach back is level from last year end season (Metz, Basel...)

Don't Care about the way he organize his programm, he enterred this challenger, in order to play some matches in a row, and confidence before going to RG... I am sure you are going to see him more and more at atp level tournament

Well, Haehnel is having a poor season and the possibility remains high that if he entered Hamburg he would have lost in the qualifying rounds. But yes he seems to hate playing around the globe. Mutis is also like that but this year he is playing very badly.

OK, so is it a reqirement to pull out of a tournament as an alternate before you can sign in to Quallies of one where you are no where on the Entry List?

Obviously, this question is regarding one person but also for future reference. I've been banging my head against the wall for so long it's numb .

Any help would be appreciated.

You don't have to be in the entry list at all at one place to play the qualies, and you can do that even if you are in the list at another place.

In fact, you could be in the qualies list at one place, even make the main draw in the end, be unable to travel there (because you didn't expect the cut to fall that much on the last couple of days), and end up being stuck at another place playing qualies even though you hadn't even entered there at first. I have seen that happen too.

Yes, of course .. This happened to Luczak 5 weeks back, when he made the Valencia cut which dropped like a rock on the last day .. he thought he had a better chance at Casablanca which was dropping earlier .. Went there and it was too late to make travel plans to Valencia (I don't know why; He only had to get there by early next week -- may be he didn't know or something) .. Was the top seed and had to play qualies at Casablanca .. He lost 6-4 in the 3rd set of the final qualifying match against Mertinak who then drew a qualifier in the first round to add insult to injury .. Luczak must have waited for two days for a lucky loser spot, and that too did not come through .. The poor guy lost a whole week for nothing!

Yeah, why couldn't Alex just enter the event? I suppose he would have preferred Prague and did not want to risk making the draw at FH instead .. No problem though; he got one by and has won a round .. plays pedroso in the final round tomorrow in the final round.
