I am surprised to see seven top 50 players in the entry list of the Sunrise-Challenger. Isn' t there an ATP rule that top 50 players have no direct entry to challengers and can play them only with wildcards ???

Just checked the ATP rule book but found nothing. . . . .

Anybody remembers the rule ??

It use to be a maximum of 2 top 50 players can enter the draw directly, the other have to get WCs... Strange

Cut off 82  Unbeatable record for a challenger. Most of ATP Tourneys don't acheive that. Strange... Even if the event takes place between 2 AMS in USA...

You´re right Huhtamaki, this case was in discussion during the Luxembourg challenger in the end of last year, a guest in the forum then said "Because of the ATP rules top 50 players can play in challenger tournaments only with wildcard. No direct entry for them." :S
Apparently that rule doesn´t exist?!

Probably many of them will withdraw, only those players who lose in the first and second round in Indian Wells can participate in the Sunrise Challenger, but you´re right, pretty impressive line up!

There is a brief article about the tournament here:

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/tenn ... rts-tennis

Unfortunately, it doesn't explain the rule, or lack of it.

I got it:

Play-Up Regulation (Challenger Series Tournaments)

1. Players positioned 1-10 in the ATP Singles Entry Ranking are prohibited from
entering, accepting a wild card and/or competing in a Challenger Series
Tournament. Players who would have been, had they and all other players
entered, a Direct Acceptance on the original Acceptance List for a Grand Slam
are prohibited from entering, accepting a wild card and/or competing in a
Challenger Series Tournament in the first week of the Grand Slam
Tournament.

2. Players positioned 11-50 in the ATP Singles Entry Ranking twenty-one (21)
days prior to the first Monday of the Challenger Series Tournament are prohibited
from entering but may receive an ATP-approved wild card in order to
compete in the Challenger Tournament. The Challenger Supervisor will make
wild card determinations consistent with the limitations outlined below.
Players positioned 11-50 are also prohibited from entering, accepting a wild
card or competing in Challenger Series Tournaments that offer less than
$50,000 in on-site prize money.

3. Challenger Series Tournaments scheduled the same week as an ATP
Tournament may offer wild cards to players positioned 11-50 in the ATP
Singles Entry Ranking who have received approval from the ATP on-site
Supervisor according to the following breakdown:
$125,000 in prize money - up to (2) two wild cards
$ 100,000 in prize money - up to (1) one wild card
$75,000 in prize money - up to (1) one wild card
$50,000 in prize money - up to (1) one wild card
$37,500 in prize money - no wild card
$ 25,000 in prize money - no wild card

4. Challenger Series Tournaments not scheduled in the same week as ATP
Tournaments, or during the 2nd week of a Grand Slam, may offer wild cards
to players positioned 11-50 in the ATP Singles Entry Ranking who have
received approval from the ATP on-site Supervisor according to the following
breakdown:
$ 150,000 in prize money - up to (4) four wild cards
$ 125,000 in prize money - up to (4) four wild cards
$100,000 in prize money - up to (3) three wild cards
$75,000 in prize money - up to (2) two wild cards
$ 50,000 in prize money - up to (1) one wild card
$ 37,500 in prize money - no wild card
$ 25,000 in prize money - no wild card

sunrise

Postby tennisnut4 » Sun Feb 27, 2005 8:26 am

Because of no atp events during week (besides IW) they have waived rules on who can enter. This is known as super-challenger.They can also offer wildcards to any player that loses in first two rounds of IW.I hope this helps in the confusion over the sunrise enteries.

I think they forgot 2 SE-spots in their initial list. (The Kyoto-challenger is played 1 week earlier.) That way Terachi and Kimmich would go from the initial list to nr 1 and 2 alternate.
Can you confirm this Jay?

BD -- you are absolutely correct. Same list, but they forgot that there were 2 SE spots, so Terachi and Kimmich were out initially. Terachi has now gone in with Faurel having gone out.

Update: Only that one withdrawal at HoChiMinh. None at the other three in the MAIN or ALT lists.

BD: It seems that they had a correction in the entry list for Salinas also, along with the the Ho Chi Minh correction. Armando, Hugo USA 161 is in the list and so Vemic is now firt out from the initial entry list.

Common Sense- This event has gotten permission from the ATP to accept these players without being Wildcards. Reason being why this has been waived, I would ask the ATP. They're a very interesting group ey? =) Whatever the reason, I think it's it's wonderful for the tournament and if players want to compete in an event and they are overqualified, I think it's great for the tournament. Unfortunately the ATP would like to keep these players in their top ATP Tour events since they put some an emphasis on them since those are the events that make the ATP money. Forget about what's best for the players or the individual tournaments.

Quick updates:

Sunrise, Sarajevo -- No withdrawals from main or alt.

Ho Chi Minh -- Faurel OUT, Terachi IN

Salinas -- Gallardo-Valles, Massa (and ven Gemerden from ALT) OUT, Vemic and Boeker IN.

That's it so far .. Strange. I expected more withdrawals, definitely from Ho Chi Minh, by now. I guess not.

Harel Levy won't play in Salinas.

Dudi Sela is in Kyoto QF. If he wins tomorrow, he is eligible for SE in Ho Chi Minh City.

BTW... do players who qualify for IW have to withdraw from next week challengers (other than Salinas)?

ZELENAY, Igor looses QF Futures Lille today, match ends at 6pm ... and he's in the qualie draw of the Sarajevo Challenger (sign in 9pm)

pretty amazing  do you really have to show up in person at the site to sign in?

btw Jay, thanks for the updates :)

Well I asked about it at Wroclaw challenger and they told me that's true and they couldn't tell me who would play until everyone eager to play had showed up in person.
so sick of love songs.

Update:

No change from what I posted above ..

So, I suppose that is the official final list at Sarajevo and Salinas from this afternoon .. There may be some last minute withdrawals that only the onsite supervisors might know.

Sorry, forgot to check above .. Good catch!

BD -- It turns out that Koubec was never in the initial list (or they had him by mistake and took him out). So, Rochus was already the last entry and now Nieminen has gone in.
