Forgive my stupidity and ignorance here.
Can someone please clarify the ‘Alternate Player’ issue? I know it’s probably self explanatory as well.

Example: Burgsmüller is down as an ‘Alternate Player’ in Milan (WK5) and yet he’s the #1 seed at The Wolfsburg Challenger the same week.
Is there a cut off date/period to determine whether a player can enter another tournament the same week?

athie: That is a fair question; so don't feel bad asking :)

A player in the ALT list for an event is allowed to enter a lower level tournament , which close with a later entry deadline. For ATP tour events, the entry deadline is 6 weeks ahead, the challengers close 3 weeks ahead and the futures/satellites close 2 weeks ahead. In Burgsmuller's case, he was #7 in the Milan ALT list, and he thought his chances were low for the cut to fall that much with withdrawals. So, rather than waste the week without playing if the cut doesn't fall, he entered three weeks later for the challenger. Now that he is in the main draw of the challenger, he will be automatically cut out from the Milan ATP alternate list and cannot play there even if the cut ultimately falls 7 spots down into the ALT list.

Also, those in the ALT list for an event in the initial entry list are not required to go there if the cut falls below them though. Only the main draw players in the initial list are required to go to the event (they will be fined otherwise). The ALT players sometimes choose not to go to an event if the cut falls too late just before the event and they cannot make travel plans. Sometimes you see a player deciding not to enter a lower event and wait. If the cut falls too late for them to go (sometimes too late for one to get a visa etc), and they end up wasting a week.

Jay,
Thankyou very much for such a detailed and lengthy reply.
My initial hunch was some deadline issue but that’s really helped clarify the ALT issue :D

PS. GO Lars in Wolfsburg :D

Third WC in Wroclaw goes to a Polish junior player, Pawel Syrewicz.

I'd be grateful if you possibly could find the withdrawals from Wroclaw before the tournament starts :D. It's my city, though. And I don't know... maybe any informations about the quallies list?
so sick of love songs.

Final update:

Andrezieux (One SE spot to be cleared)
OUT: Six players - all on the last day?! (and Pless, Knowle, Ager, Eitzinger, Bardoczky, Cerovic from ALT)
IN: Gimeno-Traver, Y-T.Wang, DeChaunac, DiPasquale, Sarstrand, Lorenzi, Scherrer
NEXT: Selenay, Munoz-deLaNava, Middlekoop, Mertl, Pospisil

Wolfsburg (One SE spot to be cleared)
OUT: ONE (and Eitzinger from ALT)
IN: Ager, Scherrer
NEXT: Petrazzuolo, Zelenay, Munoz-DeLaNava, Bardoczky, Cerovic, Middlekoop, Mertl

Wroclaw (Both SE spots cleared)
OUT: ONE (and Sarstrand, Knowle, Lorenzi, Ager, Scherrer from ALT)
IN: Pless, Bruthans, Eitzinger
NEXT: Petrazzuolo, Zelenay, Munoz-DeLaNava, Bardoczky, Cerovic, Middlekoop, Mertl

So some withdrawals did happen on the last day ..
