Nice looking fields... glad Roddick isn't playing Doha again for the big cash, guess they got Fedster this year. they seem to be able to chump out enough cash for one big player every year lol

Not too happy with Alex choosing not to play Adelaide (or any tourney in the first week). Hopefully he'll play Sydney though 8-[

Sydney's cutoff last year was #48. If he's playing there, he would have to qualify.

What's up with Tursunov being on the alternate lists? He's out for another 3 months at least with this back injury.

I'm aware of that but I didn't think that I would have to specify it. It's a given. He's 123 right now (same as he was when he quallified for Sydney last year). He lost in the 1st round of quallies in Adelaide last year so there's no big loss there. Like I said, hope he starts with Sydney and not the AO quallies.

Jay,
I believe you possess 'edit' powers? Can you put the cities in the thread titles as we did last year, thanks.

Marc Kimmich (n°308, 21 y.o.), an australian, has won one of the WC for the Australian Open. He won a tournament which was set up by the Aus Federation rewarding the winner with a main draw WC to the AO.
He has also been given a WC for Adelaïde main draw.
Bon Tennis !

I heard back today. Alex will be playing quallies in Adelaide. A little confused as to why he's not on the alternate list because he apparently knew that he was going to stick to the same schedule. That's the impression I got anyway.

Hi BD or Jay.

Can any of you tell me if Kristain Pless is in the Qualifying list of Chennai, and if he made the cut for the qualies ?

Thanks in advance.

I think both BD and Jay are away for a few days, so I'll try to answer your question. They can tell you if Pless is on any of the alternate lists, but we won't know for sure who is in the qualifying draw until its posted. Players have until 9 pm Friday night to show up and sign in for qualifying, and you never know for sure who will do that until they actually get there (which is why you sometimes see Doubles players in qualie draws at optional events, there was room for them). Only grand slams (and a few select other tournaments) post qualie lists a few weeks in advance.

The city of Chennai aslo known as Madras has been one of the zones affected by the earthquake and tidal wawe, and there are victims in this City.

I was wondering that maybe this tournament finally can be suspended or something similar.

What do you think ??

well i will contact atp right now but i very much doubt that the chennai event will go ahead next week, likely to be cancelled all together or maybe postponed till later on in the year

wonder if players will be allowed to enter any other events?

maybe a new venue can be found!

also a report on tennis australia site said arthurs is only 5 out from main draw so we must have had a couple of withdrawals!

From ATP:

"Chennai Tournament to Proceed on Schedule

The Chennai Open has been unaffected by the tsunami which devastasted much of South-East Asia, including parts of Chennai itself. Flights in and out of Chennai also remain unaffected."

This is one of the reasons I dislike unsigned posts. I have been in contact with someone in Chennai who works at the tournament. There was never any discussion of cancelling it because the tournament site and the tournaments hotels were not affected by the quake or the tsunami. There was some concern about the airport, but everything is fine. I would bet the people of Chennai are understandably shaken up by all of this and perhaps this tournament will bring some form of emotional relief to the area.

I personally will believe only signed posts from people who have built up their credibility around here....

The 3 wildcards for Chennai are also confirmed.
Anyone knows the wild cards for Doha?

Well, first of all, a prayer for all those who lost so much in the devastation in Asia. (My family, thankfully, are a few miles inwards from the coast and were unaffected).

Yes, the Chennai event will go forward. In fact, compared to other coastal areas in south India, Chennai was relatively less affected, except right at the Beach which is quite a big one (about 20 km long and very wide, normally filled with a bi9g crowd in the evenings - had this happened in the evening, it would have been much much worse there). Earthquake tremors caused some small damage at the airport I believe but everything is operational in Chennai. There was no plans to postpone the event at all.

Updates:

Adelaide (no SE spots)
OUT: Horna, Mirnyi (and Tursunov from ALT)
IN: Dupuis, Sluiter
NEXT: Hernych, Kohlschreiber, Haehnel, Arthurs, Amagro, Clement, Gasquet, Patience, Zib, Reid

Chennai (no SE spots)
OUT: Elseneer, Morrison, Popp, Mutis
IN: Patienc e, Zib, Vanek, Garc ia-Lopez

Thanks Jay. I'm glad to hear that things are good for your family and that the tournament seems to be on track. I know you are busy, but hopefully you and Jay can catch up with the lists and updates to week 6. I guess I didn't realize how dependent I had become on the two of you until the routine was interrupted. :D

:D Great that you had a nice New Year's welcoming, BD ;)
I wanted to say that the quallifying draw to Doha is already announced on the official tournament site and the players who are through are: Ulihrach, Voltchkov, Hantschk and Heuberger - if someone suffers of hangover and feels to bad to check all links ;)
I wonder when Steve will publish all of this on the site

Kasia: How come Fyrstenberg doesn´t try to qualify more often for the singles in tournaments? Of course when he does good doubles results there is no time to try to qualify but for example this week in Doha he could have just entered the qualifying and at least tried....The few times he plays singles he "does to much OK" results for not trying to play more....

I have finalised the entry-lists.
Including Wild Cards, Qualifiers, and the top-3 players who just missed the cut.

Well, as far as Doha is concerned, I think he didn't know that there were still free spots in the quallies. And they both, with Matkowski, flew to Doha on Sunday, so I guess it was too late to sign in. It was a pity indeed, 'cos there aren't many occasions to try singles in ATP tour for him, and from what I saw at his Davis Cup match last year, he's become pretty good at singles, too. I think he's concentrating 100% on doubles now, since there are really good chances that they will succeed, and as far as single is concerned, the future doesn't seem that bright.
