Actually they can give it to a first round looser. Whoever that signs up from the qualifying can take the LL-spot. In 2005, in Stockholm, Waske was a LL though he lost in the second round of qualies. This was because the guys from the last round of qualifying didn´t sign in in the morning! :o

But what if nobody registrated as lucky losers (I remember you had to sign in) or they al left rotterdam?

Do they give the spot to an Alternate? And if so, can that be anyone? For example even Nadal or a local tennisplayer?

If nobody registers/sign in as a lucky looser because they all left town then the player will get a bye into the next round (win on a walkover). This thing happened in Stockholm as well, in 2002, when Enqvist withdrew and Lleyton Hewitt got a W/O. This situation could have given any poor Swedish qualifying looser from round 1 an opportunity to play Hewitt and earn some money and one ranking point!

So the spot can NOT be given to an alternate, a local player or a wildcard (Nadal in your example)

Is there something in the water in Rotterdam, we had 4 lucky losers last year as well! Even Arvind Parmar got in (and thru to the quarters after that)

Was there not a case last year where Melzer or Mahut got a first round bye in a tour event because all the lucky loser candidates had left town. That may have been in the Netherlands too.

Bjorkman appears to be the first to suffer a Penalty

His Rankings have been hit with a Zero Pointer for his second withdrawl
