Juan Martin del Potro will not play Shrewsbury. He is already at home in Argentina and having a holiday before his pre-season training. He sustained a minor injury during the Bratislava Challenger and pulled out of the next two Challengers to rest.

I assumed that he will be able to play in A.O. but I didn´t know that the cut off list for Chennai will be about 119! . Hopefully he may get a WC for Auckland.

Well that was what it was last year. Maybe it is higher this year, but JMDP was adamant that he would play there - so I guess he is pretty confident If not - he is obviously prepared to go through quallies.

Jay, can you explain the existence of the Naples Challenger to us please. It is not a USTA sanctioned Challenger and does not appear on their calendar. The fact sheet says the prize money will be paid by the ATP. Was this event sanctioned directly through the ATP, or perhaps through the ITF? Can you have a Challenger in the US without the USTA involved?

I really have no idea about this. Don't know how Naples does not show up in the USTA list at all. Normally one would go through USTA to organize a challenger, though the challenger organizers seem to deal with ATP directly on the modalities of conducting it - putting up the the guarantee money, etc. I think USTA normally gives a list to ATP early enough avoiding conflicts, and trying to group proximal locations together - and so people go through USTA first or ATP will direct them to USTA on the calendar matter. So if you want to conduct an extra challenger in one of those weeks with a USTA challenger in the US and contact ATP directly, I think ATP would refuse to add it on, unless USTA agrees. Perhaps this week was free anyway, then the Ecuador group that does the Salinas/ Manta/ Quito challengers asked for conducting one in Florida, and ATP agreed bcause USTA was not planning anything. That may be why this challenger did not go through USTA and USTA acted like they have nothing to do with it! .. I am sure if USTA objected ATP would not allow it to avoid unnecessary trouble.

In some countries, I believe people can go directly to ATP and ask for a challenger without going through the national association. It is up to ATP to redirect them to the National Association, I think.

All guesses, basically. Not sure.
