I totally agree with Daryl. As much as I like too see hard court specialists doing it on clay court events I understand their reasons for not playing during the European clay court season.
But the grass court season is too short and it doesn´t make sense for some clay court specialists to train for a few weeks on grass events. There are some clay court players whose games don´t suit at all on grass and they don´t have time enough to make it work out on there.
If there were a couple of weeks more of grass tournaments there would be more players making the attemp on Wimbledon.

No - not if I lived on the other side of the world in South America, and had already spent 10 weeks in Europe for the clay court season, with the prospect of another 4 there during the Summer clay court swing. I would prefer to take 3-4 weeks off, go home, see my family and chill out.

Scud gets his wildcard wish
Former runner-up Mark Philippoussis has been spared the prospect of playing in next week's Wimbledon qualifying tournament after he was awarded a wildcard into the grass court grand slam overnight.

The Australian thought organisers had slammed the door shut on him after he was left out of the first list of wildcards announced on Monday.

"You've got to earn your wildcards and I've been very fortunate to have a lot and I know that," the 29-year old had said earlier in the week at the Queen's Club championships.

Philippoussis was runner up to Roger Federer in 2003 but is now ranked just 176th in the world.

He won back-to-back matches for the first time since last October at this week's Wimbledon warm-up tournament at Queen's Club.

British trio Jamie Delgado, Martin Lee, and Alan Mackin and Romania's Andrei Pavel were the other beneficiaries of wildcards given direct entry into the 128-strong men's draw.

British quartet handed SW19 spots

Britain's Jamie Delgado, Alan Mackin, Martin Lee and Naomi Cavaday, and former finalist Mark Philippoussis have all been given Wimbledon wildcards.

Delgado and Cavaday earned their spots after winning wildcard play-off competitions at Raynes Park.

But the All England Club has also given places to beaten finalist Mackin and losing semi-finalist Lee.

The move has been criticised by Lawn Tennis Association chief executive Roger Draper.

Draper is adamant home-grown players should not benefit from a leg-up into the comparatively lucrative first round if their ranking is not considered to deem them worthy.

"It is disappointing to see some of the further wildcards that have been handed to British players today," he said.

"The LTA advised the All England Club to limit the number handed out. We feel additional lucky loser wildcards do not help in creating a winning culture in British tennis.

"Good luck to all British players at Wimbledon - but in future years the LTA will work closely with the All England Club to establish a water-tight system that rewards winners and potential future winners."

Delgado beat Alan Mackin 3-6 6-3 6-4 in the men's final after earlier beating second seed Lee, while Cavaday beat British number five Jane O'Donoghue 2-6 6-4 6-4.

"I didn't play my best tennis today but I've played well all week," said Cavaday.

"I'm delighted. This was a really tough week for me and the standard was really high," she added.

The 17-year-old from Kent, ranked 536 in the world, will be joined in the women's main draw by fellow Britons Anne Keothavong, Katie O'Brien, Sarah Borwell, and Melanie South.

Their compatriots Alex Bogdanovic, Richard Bloomfield and Jamie Baker will compete in the men's draw.

The final two wildcards went to 2003 finalist Philippoussis and to Andrei Pavel.

is this guy "british" lawn tennis association pres or just president of some powerless and insignificant organization with a good name? every atp tourney in the world gives most of their wildcards to local or national players. i'm an american, but i am under the understanding that england loves their tennis and a brit has not won in 70+years. it's not that one of these guys could win this year, but a country like england should have more than three top 100 players. and grand slam wildcards offer a talented youngster a chance to improve his opportunities if he can win a match or two. now before anyone throws delgado under the bus.............. i agree that he is a journeyman who might have a good future as assistant tennis instructor at some middle class tennis club in bristol or something. but he won some kind of wildcard playoff tourney (which has been the new rage) so u have to let him in.

Doubles entires were due Friday the 16th and qualifying sign in is 4 pm Sunday June 18th, so I suppose we might have a list after that.

I haven't found the withdrawal deadline yet, but I will keep looking and edit this post if I find it.
