Memphis wild cards:
http://www.atptennis.com/memphis/news/lookwhoscoming.asp
Also returning to center court will be Mardy Fish and Scoville Jenkins, two more exciting young American players. Both were offered wild cards and both accepted as they have enjoyed playing at the tournament for several years now.

Rastogi earns Rotterdam wildcard

December 04, 2005 20:21 IST
Last Updated: December 04, 2005 21:37 IST

Karan Rastogi retained the ABN Amro Tennis Challenge title after an upset victory over country's number one player Harsh Mankad at the R K Khanna stadium in New Delhi on Sunday.

The 19-year old showed great mental toughness and also proved that last year's win at the same event was not a fluke as he scored a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win against Mankad.

The triumph, under the lights in bitter cold, helped Rastogi get the qualifying draw wild card for the 765,000-euro ATP Tour event in Rotterdam, Holland, in February next year.

The Mumbai lad, who had lost in the first round of the qualifiers at one of the biggest indoor events on the circuit last time, said he hoped to do better this time.

"I think I am more ready this time ... to beat (Rohan) Bopanna and Mankad who have been doing well in the same event gives a lot of confidence," said Rastogi who pocketed USD 4,500 as winner's prize money.

For Mankad, the highest ranked Indian on the ATP circuit at 226, it was a disappointing end, particularly to be beaten by a player who is about 140 places below him in rankings.

Mankad was up 5-3 with a break in the very first game of the first set. But serving for the set at 5-4, the 27-year old made a doublefault and then put a backhand long to face a break point.

Rastogi, who has been his practice partner on the circuit and has been sharing the room this weekend, converted it with a backhand pass, a shot that he has been using as a killer weapon in this tournament.

Yes OK, but what do a Dutch tournament offer a WC to an Indian qualifier ? Is it an Indian sponsor ??? :?

ABN/AMRO is a Dutch bank, but India is a rapidly expanding market and it is a way for the bank to establish a stronger foothold in India. In short, it's a way of differentiating itself from competing banks.

ABN-AMRO is a Dutch bank but I think they want to expand in India and by offering a WC to an Indian player they want to get positive publicity in India. In December they held the ABN-AMRO Tennis Challenge in India for a qualifying wildcard. At that tennis challenge Richard Krajicek, the tournament director of Rotterdam, also played a mixed doubles match in India together with his sister Michaella. They beat Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi.

Does anyone know what time we can expect the doubles entry list for Rotterdam to come out? And more importantly (for me), the qualifying entry list?

Thanks :)
Guest

Postby R. Jayakrishnan » Thu Jan 19, 2006 7:17 am

There is no doubles entry lists any more (they experimented with it last year and decided to stop that).

They have instead started a "doubles intentions" list which is updated as and when any doubles team tells ATP. There is no official commitment from the players and they do not have to play there, but ATP wants to use the info for any doubles marketing purposes.

As of now, here are the teams who have said they would expect to play at the three events

Costa do Sauipe
Cermak / Friedl

Memphis
Aspelin / Perry
Bryan / Bryan
Goldstein / Thomas
Kerr / Parrott

Rotterdam
Bhupathi / Moodie
Erlich / Ram
Hanley / Ullyett

Thanks Jay ;)

I guess this is good information. Yoni & Andy are of course expected to defend their title in Rotterdam. If Moodie really partners Bhupathi, we can expect to see him in qualifying.

Well, as Moodies is only 4 out from the main draw, I am pretty sure that he would make it in directly and would not need to play qualies.

As said before it´s totally no sense of doing that. Because of a player being on the alternate list doesn´t mean he´s going there to try to qualify.

hm...ok

But can you indicate how many players are on that list? I think it's not too smart to subscribe to a tournament like Rotterdam when you are the number 367 or something, because you know the cut is usual around 50.

Schalken might not be fit for Rotterdam. In that case, I am guessing they will not give the WC to a Dutch player, but to someone on the ALT list.

Verkerk is also still not fit, having pulled out of Davis Cup and might pull out, meaning Baghdatis would get in.

If Schalken isn't fit, they will give the WC to Verkerk, so he doens't have to use his protected ranking. But Schalken will play at Bergamo in 2 weeks

He would of made the cut this week at Viña del mar, which is pathetic to think chile does not have enough players to even fill the qualy of their atp event.

Updated Doubles Intentions list (no comitment; just the team's intention communicated to ATP - the teams can change their minds)

Costa do Sauipe - Cermak/Friedl, Fyrstenberg/Matkowski
Memphis - Aspelin/Perry, Bryan/Bryan, Goldstein/Thomas, Kerr/Parrott
Rotterdam - Bhupathi/Moodie, Erlich/Ram, Hanley/Ullyett, Knowles/Nestor

Swiss teletext announce that Federer has withdrawn

http://www.swisstxt.ch/TSR1/184-00.html

Memphis Quallie List

Postby Tennis724 » Tue Feb 07, 2006 9:36 pm

OK...since when is there a separate Quallie list for a weekly tourney? Does this mean that Memphis won't follow the normal Friday sign-in?

And when are the MD WCs expected to be announced?

All ISG, AMS, & Grand Slams have qualifying entry lists. Only IS & challengers have sign-ins.
And when are the MD WCs expected to be announced?
2/3 have been committed. See smucav's post above.

I don't know who you are so I'll wait for confirmation on that first part from a familar username.

I think Alex has only played Memphis once so maybe I just never noticed this separate list. Be nice if he got the remaining WC.

Well we all know who you are & why you're asking.

Seriously: read the rulebook once in a while instead of asking obvious questions in every thread & getting pissy when you don't like the [correct] answers.

Postby Tennis724 » Tue Feb 07, 2006 10:10 pm

Ok...that was a mature answer. Did I deny anywhere in my post why I was asking? No, I don't believe so. And I don't have to justify to a "guest" nor to any member here why I am asking.

Also...what is this thread for if not to ask "obvious" questions and not have to thumb through a rulebook. I'm not the first and I definitely won't be the last.

And my response was not "pissy," I am not going to believe the posting of a "guest" over any of the regulars. For all I know you are a regular...but just too lazy to log in. Not my problem.

Thank you for reminding me why I don't come here, or any MB for that matter, too often anymore to get info.

Yes, Memphis has a qualie list (like Tokyo and a few other tournaments). There was one posted in the 2005 Tournament forum here. Bummer that its only a 16 spot draw. There is one wildcard left and the competition for it is pretty fierce from what I have been told. It may not be announced until Thursday. Not sure what's happening with the qualie WC's.

Update:

Costa do Sauipe: Cermak/Friedl, Fyrstenberg/Matkowski
Memphis: Aspelin/Perry, Bryan/Bryan, Goldstein/Thomas, Kerr/Parrott, Knowles/Nestor
Rotterdam: Bhupathi/Moodie, Erlich/Ram, Hanley/Ullyett, Levinsky/Lindstedt

This new system really allows them to change  I wonder if it was Mark or Daniel who preferred to play in Memphis.

Of course, he was number 1 on the ALT list when Federer dropped out. So it's not really Krajicek's effort that he got him to play :)

Philippoussis just got the last wildcard for the Memphis main draw. 3 tournaments, 3 wildcards in a row.

According to the tournaments' website (www.abnamrowtt.nl), Peter Wessels has pulled out of Rotterdam. His Wild Card goes to Antal van der Duim.

Last qualifying Wild Cards go to Thiemo de Bakker and John van Lottum.

van Lottum, de Bakker, Huta Galung and Rastogi

Anyone know something about this?

Fernando González will probably pull out from Memphis. He has had problems with his shoulder since Melbourne and will probably rest for one more week.
