Like I posted in the other thread... why isn't Joachim Johansson on this list? Even though he stated he wasn't gonna play, he's currently the number 34 in the world and as this is a Masters is he is 'required' to play.

But this is a required tournament for players. So his name SHOULD be on the list, and then he'll be withdrawn.

What's the difference. Only players who are on the initial required list will have a zero pointer for their rankings. Now Hanescu is listed as in, he wouldn't be otherwise. So in the first case Hanescu would not receive a 0 for playing in Madrid, but now he would.

My point is that Hanescu should be 1st on the alt-list and hence have the oppurtunity not to play even if he got in. I'm sure Hanescu will play, but I want to know how these things work officially.

Canas should be on that list too, even though he'll not be playing for sure

It does seem that Johansson should be on the list, to withdraw with injury later. Canas, though, is essentially "dead" now - I don't think you'll see his name mentioned anywhere, as if he never existed as a player. I recall that's what happened when some of the other Argentines served their suspensions as well - they just disappear, and then later they reappear.

What a load of nonsense.Canas is still ranked 30 according to the ATP.He is far from dead.

Canas isn't dead, he's banned from entering tournaments and that means his name cannot appear on entry lists (because he's banned, right?).

As for Johansson, it is possible that he has formally notified the ATP of his injury and his absence, in order to get a protected ranking when he returns. Perhaps there is some technical procedure the ATP employs once that is done to prevent such players from showing up on entry lists for tournaments we all know they are not able to play. Jay might have more insight on this when he returns.

Sorry for the misunderstanding in my previous post. I do realize that English is not everyone's first language. I put the word dead in quotation marks ("dead") when referring to Canas because of course as we all know he is very much alive and travelling to NY, and such. But as far as the ATP is concerned I don't think you'll see any mention of him at all (even though his name may still appear on the master rankings list) at least until the time of his suspension is almost over.

2005 ATP Official Rulebook:

a) A qualified Event for special exempt to a ATP Masters Series Tournament is the singles event of another ATP Masters Series or International Series Gold Tournament.

Vienna is an ISG tournament.

The list initially posted by Tonix above came from the tournament website (instead of Jay's source) and is not the same as the one issued by the ATP.

On the official entry list, J. Johansson & Canas were direct entries (but OUT immediately due to long-term injury & suspension). Pavel & Hanescu were #1 & #2 on the alternate list (but IN immediately due to the Johannson & Canas withdrawals)
