I guess in Metz Jérôme Haehnel is pretty certain to get a wild card as a defending champion. ;) Unless he makes the main draw otherwise...

Hmm Hewitt's actually entered in Tokyo? According to the Australian press he is not playing again til Shanghai assuming he qualifies - b/c of the impending borth of his baby.

Postby Reeco » Wed Sep 14, 2005 3:42 am

It seems that Jerome Haehnel won't defend his title, because he is on the list of the Pons Challenger in Belgium the same week!

Is that the choice of Jerome or the organization won't give him a WC?

That would be pretty awful if his home country didn't give him a WC to a tournament where he was defending champion :S

Tokyo website has a slightly different list than the one posted above:

http://www.jta-tennis.or.jp/aigopen/e/p ... t_men.html

Hewitt OUT (or never IN); Gaudio IN

Safin OUT

Wild cards:
Takahiro Ittogi JPN 1502
Takahiro Terachi JPN 405

Smucav -- Hewitt is very much there in the official ATP list .. Still there .. Not sure what the deal is ... Jay, Sep 28

Okay, thanks. I only asked because I saw a much earlier request for doubles entry for Madrid, W42 - but I guess that's because it is Masters Series. Thanks again for the info :)

After being able to understand tennis, now I am back to the beginning.
Will one of you who understands this whole way doubles is being ruined explain it to me. For instance on the entry list, which are the doubles entries and which are the singles entries and how does one know?
Why aren't some of the best doubles players on these lists?

The doubles entry system hasn't changed [yet]. All of the direct entries that appear above are doubles teams using combined doubles entry rankings. Singles teams--using singles and/or doubles rankings--enter on site at the tournament.
Why aren't some of the best doubles players on these lists?
Even doubles players can't play every week of the year.

True, doubles is a tough game and not every one can play every week. I was just thinking that right now when everything is changing is a great time for the top doubles players to solidify their rankings so that they don't get bumped by singles players. I thought that some of the doubles players were really upset by this whole turn of events - saw it as an attempt by the ATP to pay less expenses (in other words to get two entries, singles and doubles, out of one hotel room and one car) and to pay less prize money. I thought that they might want to play especially right now and to show how their expertise is valuable - that you can't just stick a singles player in there and expect a good match.
Thanks for your explanation.

The ATP has proposed some changes to doubles:

Starting in 2006, there won't be spots reserved for doubles teams or singles teams. All places in the draw will be open to teams using either combined singles entry rankings, combined doubles entry rankings, or a combination of the two. The teams with the best combined rankings will get in the draw.

Starting in 2008, there won't be doubles entry rankings, so doubles specialists will have to play singles to have a singles ranking good enough to get in the draw. There will still be some spots reserved for doubles specialists (such as the Bryans) who tournament directors feel bring some added value to the tournament.

During the U.S. Open, 48 doubles specialists filed a suit against the ATP attempting to block these changes (plus the changes to the scoring system that are currently in an experimental phase). In all likelyhood, the changes to the doubles entry system outlined above will not go into effect (at least in their current form) & there will be some sort of compromise (accepting the scoring changes, keeping the current entry system, some reduction of prize money for doubles, etc.).

I had actually edited below your above query earlier. I see Hewitt still very much listed in the entry by ATP. I have no idea why the tournament would forget to list the top entry in their list, unless they know for sure that he withdrawing or something. He has not withdrawn yet and has always been there in the list.

Thanks, I see that now. What about Gaudio? He's listed on the official website (with his photo prominently displayed), but not on the list above. Is he a wild card?

Hewitt may have told the organizers unofficially that he intends to pull out, but he can't officially withdraw while he still play at Bangkok.
Gaudio or anyone else not on the entry list can only enter the tournament as wild card.

That isn't what I was asking. I was asking if anyone knows whether or not Gaudio received a wild card. Since Jay has confirmed he wasn't on the entry list, it makes no sense that he is so prominently displayed on the tournament website if hasn't received a wild card, yet there is nothing there [in English at least] confirming this.

Hi, I'm a Japanese tennis fan.
Gaudio entering as a wild card.
At least, the tournament website [ in Japanese version players list] says that. I don't know the reason why.

Sounds like Gaudio pulled an Agassi booboo and forgot to get his entry in on time or something. He probably asked for and received a verbal commitment from the TD ages ago. Problem solved.
