I really have to object to the use of the word 'doping' in this case. He used a prescription inhaler for his asthma and that was it. He was suspended because he failed to fill out the necessary paperwork in advance to get permission to use it. He's out for 6 weeks.

Fully agree with Fiona; we shouldn't use "doping" for this case. Still, we should use "doping" for the Puerta case. He was also suspended for anti-asthma medication. However, he got a 6-month suspension (4 times longer).
Also, we shouldn't use "doping" for the Oliver diuretic case. Still, we should use "doping" for the Canias case. He was also suspended for diuretics. However, he got a 2-year suspension (8 times or so longer than Oliver?).
The difference? We apply the word "doping" to one and not to the other. Lexical differences, other things being equal, produce different sanctions. Or, different sanctions, other things being equal, produce lexical differences. Or maybe both differences have a common cause: the three letters within the () at the end of the player's name.

In English: The other guest says: If there is (ARG) behind your name it's doping, and if not, then it's incorrectly filled out paperwork.

because if he or she says that then...it's doping

You can object all you want, but the fact is the ITF ruled that Bogomolov committed a "doping offense":

Thanks for posting the exact link to the ITF web site that I mentioned in my previous post. I'm still learning computer and I don't know how to do that.
Guest, I wish you'd register so we could know something about your point of view.
I am American, so I feel just fine calling the Bogomolov case "doping."
As you so correctly point out - that's what the ITF calls it.
Tremendous problems are being created by inconsistent administration of punishments for the same banned substances (not always performance enhancing as we know). Possibly list of banned substances is too large??
Could there be some discussion about what could possible help your tennis and what has a neutral or negative effect (for instance, those players who tested positive for marijuana - besides being "illegal" in US, would one really play better high?)

Yes, it has been reported that players who are high on marihuana perform better. They have less tension (nerve) and in general just have sharper senses. I forgot who reported this, but it's been known.

Dr. Dean Edell has stated before that athletes who test positive for marijuana use should get to keep their medals/trophies/whatever because it is technically a depressant/relaxant that should NOT enhance your performance. Of course, some people react differently to certain drugs (a good cup of coffee usually makes me quite sleepy and beer sometimes keeps my husband awake), and it is possible that a small bong hit before a match would relax away a few nerves without affecting your reflexes and response/reaction times, but what professional athlete would want to take the time to figure all of that out?

As for Alex, I'll just consider it a 'dopey' offense, since it was his responsibility to make sure his paperwork was in order. It is an expensive lesson for him to learn, and the punishment most definitely exceeds the crime.

Would you say the same about the other asthma-related case, i.e., Puerta's?

I just read the whole transcript of the Alex Bogomolov "doping" judgement. I am with Fiona on this. Jesus, this was a sad sad situation. I have rarely seen such an apologetic judgment on a case - it even says this -

ITF Anti-Doping Programme Administrator (“APA”), convened a Review Board. By 5 April 2005 all three Review Board members had reached the conclusion that there was a case to answer. However the Review Board members harboured doubts about whether the player should be charged with a doping offence. A discussion took place about whether the player could perhaps obtain a retroactive TUE in respect of his use of salbutamol on 13 January 2005. After some time the conclusion was reluctantly reached that this was impossible on the facts and under the rules contained in the Programme.

Basically the judgement notes so many facts such as that Salbutamol does not in any way enhance the performance of the athlete, that Bogomolov had earlier applied and got the medical exemption for its use, etc. The issue was simply that he (along with his doctors and others) did not take the expiry date of the exemption seriously. Basically they thought it could be done retroactively anyway, etc etc... All a big mistake!

It came down to basically the idea that "Penalty for the offense is basically the default and not an exception" - which meant they had to impose the penalty. ITF itself not spared for their less-than-perfect ways of informing the player of the expiry of the exemption and its seriousness, though the blame goes to Alex.

The judgement in Alex's case basically is this -- "sorry man, we have to fine you. We understand how you and everybody around you caused this situation, and we know the stuff you took was no "dope", but there is nothing we can do" ....

Yes, the Puerta situation (I read that judgment in its entirety too) was similar. Except that the substance found Clenbuterol, was a performing enhancing substance. The player was judged to have been unaware of it, and it was taken under emergency situations etc too. Also, Puerta had never asked for exemption for its use, unlike Alex who had done it once earlier.

I mean, really, they need to start classifying some of these cases (Alex and Puerta particularly) differently. It is very sad to read the judgements, and how the media runs with the stories of "Doping".

A young phenom with a tendency for chucking up on court?? Looks like Murray is going to try for Masters Series wild cards for Paris and Madrid and his decision to play in Belgium this week means he is almost a certainty to miss Sacramento.

Whisper it...he's better than Tim

Keep up the good work everyone

Murray signed up for Challengers for the next 3 weeks, so he either plays them or stays home. He can't play a tour event until October 24th (Basel, Lyon, St Petersburg). He can only go to Madrid as a spectator. With his current ranking, he should be able to get into Paris qualies, I don't think the French will give him a main draw WC (but stranger things have happened).

Jay, JanMike may pull from Sacto, but considering he dropped 25 places this week, he might do some math and realize he needs to get as many points as possible, wherever possible, even if it kills him. Let me know if you want photos of Harsh. I use film, so it may take a while to get them to you, but you will have them for historical use, at least :D.

Well, Kendrick never pulled out and the word around here is that he is not able to play. We'll see what happens.

I think its okay for me to list the WC - Scoville Jenkins, Sam Querrery, Sam Warburg (recent Stanford grad and from Sacramento) and I think the 4th one is Odesnik. I'm only one day into this tournament and I'm already wiped out, but today was the longest day with the 9 pm check in and everything.
