Pancho Gonzalez origin

This question is for steve but anybody that knows the answer should post as well.

I have a bet with my friend whether Pancho Gonzalez played for mexico or USA. which one is it?

:-k A little before my time. The ATP database has him as USA...at least now. Not sure about back in the day but I would say the same.

thanks. Ivan Lendl is also USA so I don't put much stock into the ATP site. Every article about him makes no mention about country either.

Tennis Hall of Fame says he was born in LA 1928 and played DC for USA 1949.

Thanks Aphex. That settles that there hasn't been any significant mexican player. I think the highest ranked one now is in the 200's.

Yes, Miguel Gallardo is currently the highest ranked player from Mexico at #203. There are quite a few of them on the tour right now, but none have broken through to the ATP level.

Alejandro Hernandez, now just below Gallardo, outside top-200 was ranked as high as #125 about 7 years back as a 20 year old. Pity that he did not go higher.

As for Pancho Gonzales, he was born in South Central Los Angeles as Richard (or Ricardo) Gonzales. "Pancho" was a nickname .. Here is a nice bio page,
