Re: Young Guns 2010

Yes, good idea. I was just coming here to get things started.

A reminder, tier I is pretty much set. It's all those who were in tier II this year minus anyone who was born in 1989. So everyone except Brydan Klein and Daniel Alejandro Lopez returns.

So the discussion is for the newbies for tier II. (A reminder: the tiers don't represent level of ability, simply the years they have been on the list: tier II is for those who are in their first year, tier I is for the second...the maximum is 2 years).

Those eligible are players born in 1990 or later.

Discuss...

Thanks SteveG, in these few (but harmful) weeks without tournaments it's always nice to discuss the young guns.

These are my early thoughts:

Tier I additions (IMO, too good to be in Tier II albeit I know your rules about it):
- Andrey Kuznetsov (RUS)
- Yuki Bhambri (IND)
- Filip Krajinović (SRB)
- Ryan Harrison (USA)

Tier II :
- Yong-Kyu Lim (KOR)
- Agustín Velotti (ARG)
- Pablo Carreño-Busta (ESP)
- Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEO)
- Andrea Collarini (ARG)
- Gianni Minna (FRA)
- Federico Gaio (ITA)
- Javier Martí (ESP)
- Daniel Berta (SWE)
- Jack Sock (USA) -- Is he headed to College?

1993 players contenders (maybe too early. Let's wait one year):
- Carlos Boluda (ESP)
- Suk-Young Jeong (KOR)

Yuki Bhambri (Ind,ATP335, b.4.7.92) - AusOpen junior winner 2009
Filip Krajinovic (Srb,ATP352, b.27.2.92)
Ryan Harrison (Usa,ATP360, b.7.5.92)
Alex Kuznetsov (Rus,ATP301, b.22.2.91) - Wimbledon junior winner 2009
Guillaume Rufin (Fra,ATP171, b.26.5.90)
Federico del Bonis (Arg,ATP195, b.5.10.90)

Alternates candidates are:

Nikoloz Basilashvili (Geo,ATP556, b.23.2.92)
Jack Sock (Usa,ATP699, b.24.9.92)

My choices would include:
Tomic AUS
Krajinovic SRB
Bhambri IND
Berta SWE
Harrison USA

The soon to be upon us Aussie Open juniors could also give us a peek into the future since that event has supplied us with quite a few current touring pros.

My choices would be:

Bhambri, Yuki (92)
Carreno-Busta, Pablo (91)
Del Bonis, Federico (90)
Evans, Daniel (90)
Goffin, David (90)
Harrison, Ryan (92)
Krajinovic, Filip (92)
Kuznetsov, Andrey (91)
Marti, Javier (92)
Rufin, Guillaume (90)
Tomic, Bernard (92)
Vivanco-Guzman, Andoni (90)

1993 players were not that convincing as 1992 players year before and I think that they'd better be considered next year when 1990 is not eligible (thus so many 1990 in my list).
I also think that the list should include players that many would like to keep an eye on (but everyone has her/his own preferences) and so I left off the list some players I will definitely follow this year (Diego Sebastian Schwartzman, Tiago Fernandes, Robert Rumler, Hugo Dellien...).

Sophomore wrote:- Jack Sock (USA) -- Is he headed to College?

He's a class of 2011, so not this year.

Rhyne Williams plays college tennis (for University of Tennessee team) and I wonder how much will he play on pro tour.

I think most of the names were told already. If you had to include someone from 1993, I'd recommend Filip Horansky, from Slovakia, looks a promising player.

I think it's pretty simple this year:

1. Bernard Tomic (Aus 92) - 2008 Aus Open Champion, 2009 US Open Champion
2. Yuki Bhambri (Ind 92) - 2009 Aus Open Champion, 2008 Orange Bowl Champion
3. Gianni Mina (Fra 92) - 2010 Aus Open Champion/Runner Up/SF, 2009 French Open Runner Up, 2009 Orange Bowl Champion
4. Daniel Berta (Swe 92) - 2009 French Open Champion
5. Alex Kuznetsov (Rus 91) - 2009 Wimbledon Champion
6. Devin Britton (USA 91) - 2008 US Open Runner Up, 2009 NCAA Champion as a freshman
7. Ryan Harrison (US 92) - 2008 Aus Open SF, 3rd youngest player to win match on ATP Tour
8. Filip Krajinovic (Ser 92) - 2008 Wimbledon and US Open SF
9. Milos Raonic (Can 90) - Had match point vs Gonzalez last year in Toronto after beating Llodra and Gabashvili
10. Cesar Ramirez (Mex 90) - 2008 French Open SF, 2008 Aus Open and Wimbledon QF, 2007 French Open QF

Thanks for your replies. We have some good candidates...some that are already fairly highly ranked, and others that have a long way to go but have shown promise in juniors. Here's the initial list I'm looking at...I need to cut a couple and get it down to 9.

Basilashvili, Nikoloz GEO 1992
Berta, Daniel SWE 1992
Bhambri, Yuki IND 1992
del Bonis, Federico ARG 1990
Goffin, David BEL 1990
Harrison, Ryan USA 1992
Krajinovic, Filip SRB 1992
Kuznetsov, Andrey RUS 1991
Marti, Javier ESP 1992
Mina, Gianni ITA 1992
Tomic, Bernard AUS 1992

As much as I'd like to keep them, I think the 1990 players are likeliest out because they'd only be on there one year anyway. There will still be time for adjustments.

Now that it looks like we have our nine members of Tier II Young Guns for 2010, when will their names and results start being posted? Cowboy

I am afraid Yuki Bhambri may not be able to make it. Indian juniors after showing promise tend to fade away unnoticed.

Well, you can't say generally that Indians fade away unnoticed. Sometimes, they also stay, but still, in the ground.
