Thanks Jay.

This is the 9th tournament El Aynaoui has entered with his injury protected ranking. Is it possible that the ATP has given him an extra entry (or, more likely, he will be withdrawing from Montreal, Cincinnati, or New Haven)?

Wild times at the U.S. Open

There are going to be some unhappy players, both young and older, when the USTA hands out its eight wild cards for the main draw.

With the dissipation of depth among U.S. men, some well-known American names might have to qualify. Jan-Michael Gambill and Jeff Morrison could be two of them.

If the USTA gives them wild cards into the main draw, it's going to be able to reward only six instead of eight encouraging juniors. And U.S. men's tennis is at a point where the younger players are commanding more attention than the older ones.

With only 104 players straight in, based on the rankings of this past week, at least three veteran Americans (James Blake at No. 107, Morrison at No. 141 and Gambill at No. 150) face the possibility of having to go through qualifying.

Blake, however, probably will get a direct acceptance because you'd expect at least three players to be injured badly enough not to play, and that might include Mardy Fish (No. 68), who quit his match in Indianapolis Thursday with residual pain from his recent wrist surgery.

One wild card automatically goes to the winner of the U.S. Hardcourts at Kalamazoo, Mich. Among the younger players, including juniors, who are under consideration are Donald Young, Tim Neilly (both top 10 ITF juniors), highly regarded junior Sam Querrey, Todd Widom, Rajeev Ram, K.J. Hippenstiel and Scoville Jenkins.

Now what happens with Brendan Evans of Key Biscayne, whose ranking is only 432, but who reached the third and final round of U.S. Open qualifying last year?

There also is Brian Baker, the former Orange Bowl winner who has produced good results in the Challengers. And Hugo Armando of Miami is having his best year.

Some of these players are going to have to take wild cards into the qualifying instead of the main draw.

Gambill and Morrison, in particular, are going to argue that they've given years of service to U.S. tennis and deserve some main-draw consideration from their home country's Grand Slam.

The nine Yanks straight into the main draw (ranking in parentheses): Andy Roddick (4), Agassi (6), Taylor Dent (30), Vince Spadea of Boca Raton (42), Fish, Kevin Kim (69), Paul Goldstein (78), Justin Gimelstob (97), Robby Ginepri (98).

Actually I am not sure if there is an early doubles list for US Open. Probably not. If there is, I will get it tomorrow or so..

I vaguely remember someone telling me that Grand Slams do not have entry lists, but then-Wimbledon had one, right?

Looking forward to finding out :D

Wimbledon has a doubles qualifying tournament, so it has to have a doubles entry list so players know whether or not they need to sign-in for the qualifying tournament.

Ahh ok interesting call, thanks S. Any reason it chooses to have DQ, while the other Grand Slams don't?

Wimbledon differ from other tournaments in many ways... this is just another one...
Wimby has also best-of-5 sets matches in qualifying final round... and best-of 5 for all doubles main draw matches... and a unique seeding formula... and no play on middle sunday... and "almost entirely" white dress code... the list goes on and on...

Yes, Wimbledon is the only event above the challenger level with a doubles qualifying event (they still do some things right out there in the land of tradition!). So they need an entry list prepared 2 weeks in advance to know who needs to play qualies.

As for the "all white" dress code, there is still another place that insists on that. The Forest Hills Club in New York, which insists on that dress code for all the challenger they conduct there! ... Stated in the fact sheets as something they will "strictly enforce" even for qualifying matches (actually even for using the practice court, I think). Interesting place. Of course they used to hold the US Open there over 25 years back.

USO Main draw: Canas, J.Johansson OUT; Norman, Kucera IN
USO Qualies: Tsonga OUT; Villagran IN.

(for some reason the official USO Q list that I have, still lists Norman. But he is OUT to main draw, and Pequery is actually IN already.)

Update:

USO Main draw: Canas, J.Johansson OUT; Norman, Kucera IN

USO Qualies:
OUT: Kohlmann, Norman, Russell, Sluiter, Tsonga, Ulihrach
IN: Villagran, Pequery, Levy, Galimberti, Stoppini, P.Amritraj
NEXT: DeChaunac, Sarstrand, Lammer, Berrer, Lorenzi, Mankad, Machado, Bruthans, Mlynarik, Thomann

So, some movement today in the qualies list ... The next two main draw withdrawlas will not affect the qualies list, but the main draw wildcards announcement this week will move the qualies list again.

Elkian: As smucav said above, there are NINE qildcards in the qualies, not eight.

Sargsian did not enter the qualies list. He is next-in for main draw though, and should make it soon.

Ok, I'm apparently having a memory loss after knowing for years. Is the Quallie Draw supposed to be released on Sunday or Monday? The fact sheet only lists the date for MD.

I see Machado as the top seed in the qualies at Manerbio. He must be aware that he made the USO qualies cut yesterday, but if he qualifies in, I don't see how he can come in by Tuesday to US and play... So, by monday evening, he will probably be gone from the Q list. I am sure the Q list cut will fall another 3-4 spots if not more by the end.

Technically, if someone is eliminated in a European challenger on Monday afternoon, he can fly overnight and get to NY on Tuesday morning... whether he will be too jet-lagged to play is another matter...

Yeah, I know. Technically yes. But practically, I don;t see him flying to US after monday. I found it interesting that he wenmt and signed in for qualies though - I can understand signing in for qualies at New Haven, but not at Manerbio. I assume he has no plans to come to the US, doesn;t have a visa, doesn't have any flight reservation etc ...

On the other hand, he may have decided that if he loses in the qualies on sunday, he could fly overnight, have a day off monday in the US and play the next day.

Also, they can request for a wednesday start - as half the Q1 matches are on wedesday ... So, it is possible he has plans to come to US after a loss at Manerbio.

The list wil be finalized Monday after 6 pm based on whether anybody in the Q list is still alove at any of the events fromj the weekend onwards where they played qualies or main draw .. Any such players are removed, the list is finalized and the draw is made monday late evening. Hopefully the US Open site will bring it up at least by 10 pm or so NY time monday.

Where Machado was playing recently???

I suppose he was playing challengers in Europe, and fancies his chances in a challenger like Manerbio more than US Open qualies... and if he fails, he still has the opportunity to fly over to NY...
If he has no plans to go to NY he should have withdrawn by now...

I don't know exactly how players handle their travel arrangements but these guys often have their plans changed at short notice...either the guy made several reservations, or booked the flight of Sunday night and if he goes through to MD he'll stay in Europe anyway... is he commited to any other tournament on weeks 35+36?

well... Machado is on the alternate list for Freudenstadt on week 35... I suppose if he plays at Manerbio AND US Open qualies he can't play there as well, isn't it?

pretty obvious to me ... he'll disappear from US open list soon methinks , probably after ATP calls him to inform him he made the cut for qualies

I talked with Machado a month ago and he didn't has intention on Manerbio and he expect play in New York. So I think that he prefer US Open Qualie than Manerbio.

Update:

USO Main draw: No change from above

USO Qualies:
OUT: Aldi, Baker, Blake, Chiudinelli, Gambill, Kendrick, Ketola, Kohlmann, Labadze, Mackin, J.Minar, Norman, Philippoussis, Ram, Reynolds, Russell, Schalken, Sluiter, Tsonga, Ulihrach (and Machado, Thomann, Vico, Dell'Acqua, Motomura, Mertl, Popp, Granollers-Pujol, Svarc, Eitzinger, from ALT)
IN: Villagran, Pequery, Levy, Galimberti, Stoppini, P.Amritraj, DeChaunac, Sarstrand, Lammer, Berrer, Lorenzi, Mankad, Bruthans, Mlynarik, Mergea, Gremelmayr, Miranda, Marray, Smeets, Cakl
NEXT: Iwabuchi, Zelenay, Logtens, Baccanello, T.Chen, Odesnik, Fitz, Auckland, Moyano, Widom

So, a good number of changes today in the qualies, without the help of any changes in the main draw. I am surprised that the main draw still has not moved much at all.
