The 2005 Legg Mason Wild Card Challenge at Sport & Health Clubs showed a changing of the guard in area tennis. Newcomer, Izak van der Merwe, earned the singles title, defeating defending champion, Trevor Spracklin, in straight sets. In the doubles competition, 2004 singles finalist, Matt Scott, and his partner, Joey Atas, avenged previous years’ losses by winning their first championship.

In his first tennis tournament towards a professional career, van der Merwe earned $1,000 and a wild card into the singles qualifying competition of the 2005 Legg Mason Tennis Classic. van der Merwe, a recent graduate of Old Dominion University and an ITA All-American, used his blazing serve on the lightening fast courts at the Arlington Y Tennis & Squash Club to defeat Spracklin, 6-2; 6-2.

Atas and Scott faced stiffer competition in the doubles final. After dropping the first set 4-6 to Clemson teammates, Damiisa Robinson and Nathan Thompson, Atas and Scott rallied to win the second and third sets, 6-3, 7-5. Robinson and Thompson did not go down without a fight, coming back from a 5-2 deficit in the third set. With $2,000 and a wild card into the doubles main draw of the 2005 Legg Mason Tennis Classic on the line, match point proved more than climactic; Atas and Scott pumped fists while Robinson and Thompson could not hide their disappointment.

Ryderstedt is not gonna go to Sopot, he´s playing the US Hardcourt season this year but unfortunately has to go back to Europe to play two matches (at least) in the German Bundesliga

I didn't think he would but I guess the organizers wanted to cover all the bases since they've been featuring Blake (along w. Roddick, Agassi, & Henman) in the t.v. ads for several months. (He was ranked a lot lower before the French Open, so there was a real possibility then when they started running the ads that he would be so low on the alternate list that he wouldn't get in.)

I have this telepathic communication with ATP ... Actually the lists I get are official, as they are available to the players. For a period initially last year, I was holding back info on top withdrawals etc, as I wondered if that would cause trouble to tournaments and we (actually the players making the lists available to us) would get ATP's wrath. But, as there were no complaints after several months to SteveG about the lists coming out in this forum, we decided to post the authentic lists.

Actually, it is better for ATP to have authentic info coming out - because there have been several instances where rumors have started about players withdrawing, but it was officially not correct - and we have been able to squash some rumors. So, I assume ATP and the tournaments probably would be fine with our "sevice" to the public here. After all, this is stuff that the public should know.

Also, as ATP does charge the players for the list-service, at first it made sense for us not to undermine their plans. Now that all the players are required to subscribe to that service and can enter events only through that, what we do is not going to affect ATP's plans with the players and this does not hurt anybody (I think).

In any event, I am sure it has brought out a certain appreciation in all of the readers here about what a tough job ATP actually does with all the multiple entry lists on thursday/friday of each week, to finalize things by contacting the players who are in multiple lists and are all over the place traveling. At least I don't look at ATP as a totally iefficient and clueless organization as I used to, once ..

Gaudio's withdrawal can't be made officially while he still plays at Kitzbuhel. It was the same with Nadal at Umag, his withdrawal couldn't be announced officially until after the final.

2005 ATP Official Rulebook:

A. Regulation:
A player may only enter and compete in one Grand Slam, ATP, Challenger Series, Satellite Circuit or Futures Tournament or special event during that Tournament Week. Once a player enters and is accepted into the main draw of singles or doubles, signs in or enters the qualifying competition, he is committed to that Tournament for the week, unless released by the Administrator of Rules and Competition or Supervisor. A player who loses in the singles qualifying competition may enter the doubles event of any Tournament.

The ATP supervisor in Washington wouldn't have allowed Delgado to sign-in for qualifying if he was in violation of the rule.

The other explanation is that he may have mistakenly been entered into the challenger by the ATP (it happens from time to time).

It is certainly a rare case. Normally J.Delgado would noy be allowed to enter DC. I don't think the supervisors ever give that "release" mentioned in the rule that smucav quoted. It is probably given only in case of some serious problems like terrorist threat to players from some country etc etc. Even visa problems and flight problems do not count as excuses.

I think what happened is what smucav gave as the second option - there was some mistake and he was wrongly entered in the Segovia list. Note that he was cut out quite early at Segovia.
