normally for toronto masters, there should be 52 direct entries.
Anybody knows why there are only 51 now?

Special exempt for TMS is reserved only when there is another TMS the previous week (IE Miami, Hamburg, Cincinnati).

Actually there IS a special exempt spot available at Toronto this time, it seems! (ATP does list one SE for Toronto) ..

The reason is that Kitzbuhel is the week before (unlike two weeks before last year). According to the ATP rule book, "A qualified Event for special exempt to a Tennis Masters Series Tournament is the singles event of another Tennis Masters Series or International Series Gold Tournament."

I really didn't know that International Gold series events counted for this! .. So, that solves the mystery. Reach semi at Kitzbuhel and you will make the Toronto draw!

Here are some of the players entered into challengers, who are automatically out from the main draw next-in list and from the Qualifying alternates list (the once I notice; there may be a couple of others I missed):

Volandri (San Marino)
J.Nieminen (San Marino)
O.Rochus (San Marino)
Berdych (San Marino)
Saretta (San Marino)

A couple of others who may leave the lists are,
De Voest (3rd out from Segovia)
Rajeev Ram (4th out from Lexington)

Toronto wild cards

Postby Taxmanpat » Wed Jul 21, 2004 7:30 am

Tennis Canada has announced (to no one's surprise) that the main draw WCs have been given to Nestor, Dancevic, Larose and Niemeyer.

The qualifying WCs have been given to Cvetovik (sp?) Gubenco and Sandovich, with one more to be announced on Thursday.

Cheers !

Thanks Jay. (Is there a US Open list somewhere?)

I believe Ancic is nursing an injury that he got playing Roddick at Wimbledon, but I can't remember if its a shoulder, hip, or foot.

Last WC goes to Andrew Piotrowski, who defeated Peter Polansky to earn it.

Noam is in Indy QF. I don't think he will make it to qualies at Toronto.
Which Ram is it? Rajeev or Andy?

nitsansh: It is Rajeev Ram. Andy is two spots behind. As for Noam Okun, I suppose he can still get to Toronto if he loses tomorrow.. If he makes the draw, he only needs to get there by saturday 10 am (they may even schedule a later match for him if needed). The guys inside the cut are automatically into the draw and are not required to sign-in Friday night. The only sign-in is for ALT spots if anybody from the Q draw is a no-show on saturday.

Update:

Main Draw: No change.

Qualies:
OUT - Enqvist, Escude (I suppose they said they will wait for two more main draw spots to clear for them - they are the next two for main draw)
IN - DeChaunac, Knowle
NEXT - DeVoest, Cermak, Etlis, R.Ram, Mankad, A.Ram

I believe Mankad is already in Lexington for qualies. Hopefully Rajeev will get a wildcard at lexington too. Cermak is in the doubles SF saturday at Kitzbuhel.

Yes. Stepanek is still in there for main draw if he makes it, not for qualies. I assume he may have informed ATP that he can get there for main draw if he makes it.

Possible next withdrawals in the qualifying main and Alt lists (if they win today, they are out from the Toronto Q tomorrow):

Arthurs - playing doubles SF late at night at Indi
Carraz - playing singles QF at Indi today
Okun - playing singles QF at Indi today
Kendrick - playing singles QF at Aptos today
Andy Ram - playing doubles QF at Indi

If Arthurs wins it will be after the Q draw is made at Toronto, and so one ALT spot will clear in the Q draw before play starts tomorrow, unless he withdraws himself today; perhaps not. He will try to fly up there tomorrow morning if he loses doubles tonight I guess. Oh what a life these players have, eh?

Anyway, at least a couple more guys are sure to make it into the Toronto Q from the qualies list. Andy ram has a tough choice today. Should I win or should I lose? :) ... Those playing singles will of course will go for the win, as it is for a lot of points.

Okun play Carraz in Indy QF, so one would be in the semi. Therfor Etlis is definitely in.

What happends in the case of Andy Ram? There's no way he can be in Toronto on time for alt sign-in, but will he be considered for a spot?

BTW... he won't have any dillema today... doubles semi is more important than qualifying, and he won't let down his partner... mind you, he's defending champion at Indy and won't give up the title easily...

Oh, I missed the fact that Okun plays carraz. So add one more spot in the qualies draw for sure. Etlis is in (no idea if he is playing at all though; he has not played singles in ages; only one event or something this year).

Looks like Andy will make it into the qualies cut today. Then all he has to do is to ask for a later start tomorriw and fly up there in the morning from Indi. There seems no way fopr him to sign-up for any ALT spots cleared up by no-shows tomorrow. He has to make the cut bu tonight for qualies and be in the draw (he will quite possibly be in)

What time is the sign-in deadline?

Andy's match is scheduled for 4PM (possibly later) at Indy, which is 5PM at Toronto... the match might not be over until 7 or 8 Toronto time...

So there is no way for Andy to get to Toronto for sign-in by 9 pm. You have to be physically there at the tournament office; nothing else is accepted. I don't think he will need it. I am quite sure that Rajeev Ram and Andy Ram will make the draw by tonight; no need to sign in.

But I would love to see Erlich/Ram beating Black-Ullyett this evening though. Not easy but the Israeli pair is very good and it won't be a surprise at all if they win.

It's not certain that andy will get into Quallies... if Etlis and Rajeev Ram both enter he's 3rd in line at the moment... he needs 2 players from qualies or 3 from MD to withdraw to get in...

BTW, Ram&Erlich play Rodriguez&Parrot today... Ullyet&Black maybe tommorrow...

He might get Kendrick's spot in the qualie draw. Kendrick plays at 2 pm PDT/4 pm Indy time so that result will be known before dinner in Indy (unless Kendo goes mental and plays another unnecessary 3 setter).

Main Draw:

OUT -- Verkerk, A.Martin (and Stepanek and Tursunov from the ALT too)
IN - Karlovic, Carraz
NEXT -- Llodra, Ancic, Beck, T.Martin

Qualies:

OUT - Carlovic (Cermak and R.Ram also from the ALT!!)
IN- Etlis
NEXT - ANDY RAM!!! .. :) .. Vagnozzi, Crabb, Zimonjic

Knowing that one spot will clear from Okun-vs-Carraz at Indi, Andy is alkready in. After this basically it is a free-for-all. Whoever shows up tonight at Toronto makes it in, as I think there will be a spot or two more that will clear.

I just heard that Phillip King, who was to play Kendrick (and also a candidate for an SE spot at Lexington) had badly injured his left (non-playing hand) running into a ball boy or something yesterday. He was getting X-Rays done it seems... So, nobody knows what will happen. Ah the glorious uncertainties on the ATP tour on the Fridays! :)

Update - no changes in the main draw or qualies...

Carraz just beat Okun at Indi, so Carraz' spot in the qualies will clear up and Andy will go in ...

Any word on when the quallie draw will be released? Do we have to wait till the alternate sign-in deadline?

The way it looks is that Bogie will be seeded in the Quallies. Doesn't always mean much but I hope that will give him a boost and relieve some of the frustration.

Just realized that it's a 32 player draw so Bogie won't be seeded unles 6 more above him pull out. Not likely.

nitsansh - you are right. Carraz winning does not help Andy. But Kendrick should be able to win at Aptos without much delay and Andy's spot should come through ..

Tennis724 - Yes, we may have to wait till night time in Toronto.

Thanks, Jay. Looks like I'm for another LONG wait (bad for someone with no patience

It's only 5 PM over there and I don't think the closing of sign-ins is until 9 PM :HitWall:

Is that normal that only 2 players between 200 and 300 remain in qualies???

I note that the next 3 players (after Andy) in alt list are non-Americans, and as far as I know not playing in America this week... I don't suppose they will make a trip to Canada if they don't have a guarantied spot...
maybe Zimonjic will be there as I suppose he'll play in doubles...
