Shouldn't there be some updates to this list by now? Or is everyone waiting as long as possible to pull out because it's a Masters?

OK, I was getting confused .. just figured it out. The list BD posted for Paris Qualifying was actually for Madrid qualifying. Paris Q list won't be out for another couple of weeks (three weeks ahead of the event).

So I moved the qualifying list in from the other thread to here. So now you have the qualifying list above!

Actually too early for updates, as we are about 2.5 weeks away still, but since you all are dying to know ..

Update:

OUT: Coria, Grosjean, Kuerten, Santoro (and Verkerk from ALT)
IN: Youzhny, Soderling, Melzer, Arazi
NEXT: Malisse, Costa, Haas ...

I guess we knew those withdrawals, so no surprise ..

Rafael Nadal was given the first wild card.
Another wildcard will go to the winner of Marca's poll.
Current standaings there:
Corretja 40,6%
Ferrer 36,4%
Martín 10%
Montañés 7,8%
Sanchez, 4%

There is also one special exempt spot (and in total just 3 wild cards, not 4 like I wrote earlier). This spot will go to a semifinalist of Vienna I guess. Perhaps interesting to follow this week who will get it.

Greetings

Marca is a Spanish sports newspaper (see http://www.marca.com/indices/tenis.html). You can vote for which Spanish player you'd like to see win a wildcard into TMS Madrid. Last year Nadal won it.

That's a nice way to give a wild card ! At least, the player deserve it (from the spectator point of view) :)
Are there any other tornament that has the same wild card policy ?

Kiefer injured his wrist at the USO and he's only just had the cast off, so he is probably done for the season.

Hewitt apparently mentioned that he would keep a light schedule after the USO and is fishing in Australia somewhere at the moment. We may not see him at all until the Masters Cup.

Roddick is claiming right knee soreness, but he has also stated that his priority is resting up and preparing for Davis Cup (but I think he'll go to Stockholm and pick up that guarantee).

Special Exempt - spot !

8 Vienna Quarterfinalists
David Nalbandian (ARG) : in already
Guillermo Canas (ARG) : in already
Tommy Haas (GER) : in already
Robby Ginepri (USA) : in already
Feliciano Lopez (ESP) : in already
Rainer Schuettler (GER) : in already
Davide Sanguinetti (ITA)
Nicolas Massu (CHI) : in already

So if Sanguinetti wins, he's in Madrid as the special exempt, I think.
Not sure though. Perhaps Jay can confirm or disconfirm.

Why Vienna and not Moscow?
Those two tournaments are at the same level, aren't they?
Apologies if that's a dumm question but I still don't get the SE rule very well.

I think no SE is given for next week cos Vienna, Metz or Moscow are not the same level of Madrid (TMS). SE are only given between tourneys of same level. so TMS with TMS, INT Series with INT Series and so on.
It might be that there are some exceptions. So please Steve or Jay confirm please.

A question for you:

the other 7 players in Vienna's QF are already in MD,then Sanguinetti has automatically the SE winning or losing today?

SE are not always given ;) Sanguinetti must win otherwise it will be released & someone from Alternates will get the spot

for more info on SE go to ATP Rulebook, page 134

Nadal appeared on the original alternate list.
I deleted him after he got the wild card and after Jay stopped referring to him in the next-in lists. (Andreev was on the ALT-list as well originally)

A few weeks ago I started to delete the players who whitdrew and who were on the alternate list. From now on I'll leave them in the alternate list and give them a red colour. That will be less confusing I think (and hope). I'll do it in a minute for Madrid, to stop the confusion!

Greetings
BD

PS : to PatatRiek : yes, the wildcard originally reserved for Nadal, will go to someone else

I've just one question :
I know that the entry is based on the ranking 6 weeks ago.
Is this the same for the Qualifying ?

And how can you explain in your post that Haas is IN and Volandri in the Qualifying, with the same ranking ?

IN Haas, Tommy GER 45

Madrid Qualifying
2 Volandri, Filippo ITA 45

Thanks in advance
pipoun

MD : 6 weeks in advance
Quali's : 3 weeks in advance

That's also the solution to your "haas-volandri-45"-problem.
6 weeks ago Haas was no. 45
3 weeks ago Volandri was no.45

Yeah, I was wondering about Nadal too .. I might have a made a mistake, or they put him back in among the direct entries. If he is anyway making it, they can use the wildcard for somebody else!

Anyway, another update ...

Madrid Main draw (One SE spot to be released)
OUT: Coria, Grosjean, Kuerten, Santoro, Moya, Hewitt , Roddick, Kiefer, El-Aynaoui, Gaudio, Federer (and Verkerk, Melzer, Andreev, Davydenko, Llodra from ALT)
IN: Youzhny, Soderling, Arazi, Malisse, A.Costa, Haas, Labadze, Ginepri, Calleri, Nadal, Karlovic
NEXT: Zabaleta, Sargsian, Ferrer, Philippoussis, A.Martin

Madrid Q
OUT: Malisse, Nadal, Soderling, Labadze, Ginepri, Llodra, Beck, Ferrer, Karlovic (and Benneteau, Kohlschreiber, Hernych, A.Popp, J.Blake from ALT)
IN: J.Nieminen, D.Sanchez, J-M.Gambill, R.Stepanek, Koubek, Starace, Carraz, Monaco, Hanescu
NEXT: Calatrava, Muller, Corretja, Montanes, Vliegen ..

So, there goes Federer too .. Man, this tournament is hurting badlky. Sorry to see that. This is really unfair to the fans for the top players all not showing up enmasse.

Henman top seed?

Postby Jon-UK » Fri Oct 15, 2004 7:21 am

Will this make Henman top seed for Madrid? Assuming he is fully recovered from his injury and doesnt drop out - either way, chance for Henman, Agassi and Safin to all make hay while the others "rest".
