Coria was operated on two and a half weeks ago and he said he wouldn't play for three months. I guess this means pretty much the whole of the rest of the season, but he also said he'd like to play in Houston.

Beijing?? Kind of weird that he would choose to go over to Asia rather than stay close to home for one more week before Bangkok :S

Then again, if the rumor that i just read in the NY Post is correct he may pull out.

Jay,
Do you think there is any chance that Delray could be cancelled or moved if there is too much damage to the site and they can't clean it up in a few days? Why did they ever schedule this tournament at this point in the calendar...

Florida has been having a really nasty hurricane season so far. First, there was Hurricane Charley and now Hurricane Frances this weekend and i've read that there's another one coming behind Frances but not as strong.

I've been wondering the same thing about Del Ray. Why they ever moved it to September is beyond me. I won't be surprised if it gets cancelled. Then again, if the weather does clear up for a week or two they might be able to salvage it. I would guess that it'll be a last minute decision.

thanx for the info Tennis724 ... I heard something in the news about a hurricane but didn't have an idea Delray beach was hit.... weird discission indeed from ATP, last year this tournament was held early march i think?

anyways, i hope the weather will get better soonish

Delray

Postby michelleg » Mon Sep 06, 2004 9:31 am

Ok, just a quick Florida geography lesson, Delray is just south of the Palm Beaches, just north of Boca Raton on the Atlantic coast of Florida. (I'm directly across from that area, on the other coast in Naples.)

The damage is mostly power outages and tree/landscape mess, not sure if that is enough to cancel the tourney, but Hurricane Ivan will play more into the decision, as it is currently a cat 4, not as large as Frances, but exponentially more powerful in terms of winds. To make matters worse, most computer models have it in the vicinity of South Florida next weekend.

Not only is it ridiculous to schedule a tournament in South Florida during the height of hurricane season, it is also rainy season here. Once again the folks over at the ATP are demonstrating their utter lack of common sense. UGH.

I'll do my best to keep you all posted, as my sister-in-law is scheduled to have a vendor booth at the tourney. I am sure she will know very soon whether or not the tournament will go on as scheduled.

found some news on the Delray website :

Millennium ITC Cleans Up Delray Beach Site in Wake of Frances

“We've lost 100-year old trees, courts are flooded, fences are twisted, our canopies are down, we have leaks in buildings, but the Millennium International Tennis Championships will go on,” says tournament director Mark Baron of the 12th annual ATP tournament that is scheduled to begin this weekend at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. “The City of Delray Beach is 100 percent behind us and we are busy cleaning up the site.”

Qualifying rounds for the Millennium ITC, presented by NetWorth Systems and 1400 The Fan, will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 11 and 12, beginning at 10:00 am and noon, respectively. The main draw will begin Monday, September 13 and continue through the 19th.

Phone service to the ticket offices has not been restored since Hurricane Frances passed through Delray Beach on Saturday, but fans can still purchase tickets at the Tennis Center box office. “We hope to have telephone service restored soon,” says Baron, “and fans should keep trying to get through at our 561- 330-6000 number.”

A casualty of Frances alluded to by Baron was the 100-year old ficus tree that provided a natural canopy across much of the site. As the tournament's centerpiece, it helped the Millennium ITC win an ATP award for site presentation in 2002.

Naples?

Postby Jon-UK » Thu Sep 09, 2004 7:54 am

Message to Michelleg - we go on our hols to Naples quite often and are looking at buying a home there; always wondered whether Naples had considered running an event? Didnt they have a Champions Tour event there a few years ago, I remember players like Connors winning it. Is that still going?

Great place Naples, Tommy Bahamas was our favourite restaurant to eat and watch the world!

Naples

Postby michelleg » Thu Sep 09, 2004 8:45 am

*non-sequitur to the thread* Indeed Naples is a beautiful place! I know Tommy Bahamas well, as I frequent Campiello's right across Third.

We're all a little unnerved here at the moment given the current projected path of Ivan...the Keys are currently starting the evacuation process, and I am sure that our neighborhoods west of 41 will begin that same process come Saturday if all remains the same.

Actually, ironic that you mention real estate, as I am a real estate broker here in Naples....feel free to email me at michelle.groenings@engelvoelkers.com should you still have an interest in purchasing property here.

Yes, the last Champions tournament was held at our tennis club (Naples Bath & Tennis.) Unfortunately, all we have left in terms of tennis tournaments now are charity events (Venus and Serena did theirs last year at NBTC, this year its Johan Kriek's event there.) I can't understand why we can't at least attract a challenger level event, as we have a lovely community to showcase.

Isn't it Christophe, not Ollie, who's out of Bucharest?

Christophe retired from his match in a Challenger in Aschaffenburg yesterday because of his leg :(

My mistake...just scrolled all the way back up. Could've sworn it was Christophe. Ollie does need the rest though and the run at the Open should give him a good jump in the rankings. Hopefully, back into the 80s.
