Known as the racquet of choice for such tennis greats as John McEnroe and Steffi Graf, Dunlop in recent years has made a return to the sport and is now used by such pros as Nicolas Almagro, Fernando Verdasco, Jurgen Melzer and Dominika Cibulkova.
Dunlop will launch six new frames in its Biomimetic series for 2012. Biomimetics is the study of the structure and function of biological systems as models for the design and engineering of materials and machines. Dunlop uses the name Biomimetics to describe its line of racquets that adopts some of nature’s most efficient and optimized characteristics and applied them to their frames.
Four of the frames will be brand new while the company is also introducing three new Biomimetic technologies including BioFibre that helps prevent shock, AeroSkin for aerodynamics and MoS2 grommets that help reduce friction on the strings.
Aeroskin is inspired by the shark, one of the planet’s most perfectly designed creatures. Dunlop was inspired by how a shark’s body is covered in tiny riblets that allow the animal to swim with no effort through the ocean. Aeroskin involves placing a special texture on the outside of the racquet frame that helps smooth airflow around the racket to reduce aerodynamic drag. This makes the racquet easier to handle while also increasing speed and power for the player.
The new racquets are organized according to swing style and playing technique.
The F Series (blue label) are for aggressive players with a fast swing who need speed and precision.
The M Series (green label) are for those with a medium swing and who need help generating power and with maneuvering the racquet.
The S Series (red label) are for intermediate players with a slow or shorter swing who need more help creating power and want a more forgiving frame.
While these new frames are set to debut in October of this year, players may also want to check out the current lineup of Biomimetic racquets.
