A Ukraine vs USA clash is guaranteed in round four as Elina Svitolina looks to build on a strong Wimbledon with another deep run in New York. She will play Dayana Yastremska with the winner going on to face either Madison Keys or Sofia Kenin, in what should be a intriguing match whichever of the four face off.
Yastremska saw off Rebecca Peterson in round two to advance, easing past the Swede with a 6-4 6-1 victory. While she has a high winners count, she is already at 70 unforced errors through two matches – something to be concerned with even with the huge amount of winners she is hitting additionally. It is often all or nothing for 19 year old, who already has two titles but a bunch of R1 exits this year.
Svitolina played one of her best matches for a long time in round two, beating Venus Williams in straight sets 6-4 6-4. Venus had been out of form for a while but came into this match off a 6-1 6-0 victory and came into this match in the same vein, hitting well. It was a tough fight for Svitolina but she managed to come through, securing vital holds at the end of each set just as the pressure was being piled on her. “When I face her, it’s always a challenge because she always fights. You have to earn almost every point. You have to step up your game. If you give her short ball she always takes it on. So you have to be aware. And playing every point, that’s, I think, what is challenging to play against her.” she said.
Yastremska plays ultra aggressively but low percentage tennis is probably not the best tactic to take it one of the game’s best defenders in Svitolina. “She’s been improving. I think it’s great for her. She has been taking some good players and really showing she’s a powerful player. I have to bring my best game. I try to focus only on my game, and it’s important for me to bring my best game.” Svitolina said. The fifth seed should be able to make things tricky for her less experienced opponent and eventually break her down. Although she has not been at her best for much of the year, her last two slams suggest a corner is being turned.
Prediction – Elina Svitolina in three sets
