Stan Wawrinka

The headline match on the men’s side has to be the one between former French Open champion Stan Wawrinka and Grigor Dimitrov. The pair will be eager to get back to the heights of their previous high rankings. Wawrinka is still outside the top 20 following injury while Dimitrov was No.5 this time last year, now sitting outside the top 40.

Wawrinka has bounced back from a three match losing run prior to this tournament, being one of the more impressive performers thus far. He is one of just two players to have not dropped serve all tournament across the seven sets he has played. He beat Josef Kovalik in round one and navigated a potentially tricky clash against Christian Garin with surprising ease, outplaying the Chilean in a 6-1 6-4 6-0 victory. “I was really aggressive, moving much better than the first round… I think I have been playing really well.” he said. “It’s for sure one of the best matches I’ve played in the last few months, the most complete match, also.”

Dimitrov has struggled for consistency this year, with his failure to make it past the quarter final of any tournament proving fatal for his ranking. It will be tough for him to surpass that here but toughing out a pair of five set wins will do wonders for his confidence. The second was against Marin Cilic, with him twice needing to come from a set down to eventually advance 6-7 6-4 4-6 7-6 6-3. “Every win that I have now, I appreciate it,” he said. “It was a very, very important match to me, without a doubt, though. Clearly I have struggled the past two, three months. The shoulder hasn’t been great.”

There were few expectations for Wawrinka before the tournament, despite his past performances here. That could change with a strong win once more against Dimitrov. “I know how well I can play here… this is just one match, I just want to be ready for the next one.” he said. He is 4-4 against the Bulgarian but does have wins at two of the last three slams, winning at Wimbledon and the US Open. If he keeps up his current form, he should be expecting to make that three of four in what should be a great display of attacking tennis.

Prediction – Stan Wawrinka in four sets
