Rafael Nadal looks to move one step closer to another Indian Wells title, with Diego Schwartzman standing in the way of a fourth round spot. All eyes will be on the projected clash with Federer in the last four but Russians Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov may provide issues for him earlier than that. Check out the Nadal vs Schwartzman H2H.
Schwartzman is seeking to avoid too big a drop in his rankings prior to the clay swing next month. The Argentinian has become more accomplished on hard courts but has still been slipping in recent months. At a career high in June 2018, he has fallen outside the top 25 from a high of 11. He had an easy win in his opener, beating another Spaniard in Roberto Carballes Baena.
Nadal bounced back from his Acapulco loss with a crushing defeat of Jared Donaldson in his opener. He had too much for the returning American, taking it to the wildcard from the start. He served superbly while adding 5 breaks in the 6-1 6-1 win. He hinted at a hand issue on Mexico, something that seems to have cleared up coming into this tournament. “I was able to have a good week of practice, playing some sets, working on the things that I need to work.” he said. “Today was a very positive step for me.”
Despite the dominant 6-0 head to head record against the Argentinian, Nadal is not getting complacent. “We practiced a lot of times, and we played some tough matches. And this one of the best talents of the sport today. So going to be a tough one against Diego.” he said.
Prediction – Rafael Nadal in straight sets
