Andreescu is quickly becoming a fan favourite after exploits in the desert but Miami crowds could have been denied much more of her without her good fortune in round one. She saved match point against Irina Camelia Begu in round one but had a much easier time against Sofia Kenin yesterday. She broke six times in all, taking advantage of poor serving numbers by the American to win 6-3 6-3. “I try not to overthink about what happened last week,” she said afterwards. “The only pressure I think is the pressure I put on myself. If I go into every match playing my best — not playing my best but trying my best, because you can’t play your best every match — if you try [your] best every match, give 100 percent, that’s all that matters to me.”
Kerber needed to come from a set down to win her first match here, beating Karolina Muchova 3-6 6-3 6-3. Although the struggle may not have suggested it, Kerber came into the tournament high on confidence after making the Indian Wells final – despite the result. “I was not expecting two weeks ago to be playing here in the finals, especially after the last few weeks where I was a little bit struggling,” she said after Indian Wells. “So that’s why I’m happy about this tournament and that gives me a lot of confidence.”
Andreescu really is playing some great tennis this year, mixing in her undoubted power with a great variety of shots. However, it just looks like a matter of time before all this tennis catches up with the young Canadian. She showed great heart to fight through pain and cramping to beat Kerber last weekend but it would require an incredible effort to repeat that this time round.
Prediction – Angelique Kerber in three sets
