Serena Williams looks to continue her march through the US Open draw on day 7 of the tournament. She plays the Estonian Kaia Kanepi for a spot in the quarter finals, where the winner will play either Ashleigh Barty or Karolina Pliskova. Kanepi will need some good fortune if she is to make her third US Open quarter final and seventh slam one overall.
Kanepi has backed up her shock round one win over Simona Halep in style, securing back to back straight sets wins over Jil Teichmann and Rebecca Peterson to make it to this stage of the tournament. Kanepi had to come from a break down three times in the second set against the latter to ensure she held on to her sets streak, eventually winning a tiebreak for a 6-3 7-6 win.
Serena had no nerves when facing her sister, completely dominating the match up for a 6-1 6-2 victory. Even a potentially nasty looking ankle turn could not stop her as she hit 9 aces and broke four times in the win to extend her record to 18-12 over Venus. “I think it’s by far the best match I ever played against her in forever. But I don’t know about ever, ever. It probably was. I played much better tonight than I have since I started this journey on my way back.” she said on the win.
“Well, she obviously knows how to win. She played and beat the No. 1 seed. I’ve played her a lot. We’ve had some close matches. Each match is new. She knows how to play very good tennis.” Serena said on Kanepi, recognising the threat of her opponent. However, her memory may be a little off in that they have played four matches with Serena winning all of them in straights – the closest being a 7-5 6-4 in Beijing 9 years ago. It should be the end of the line for Kanepi if Serena maintains the impressive form she has been in this week so far.
Prediction – Serena Williams in straight sets
