Defending Miami Open champion Johanna Konta can move one step closer to holding on to her title with a win over Venus Williams on Monday afternoon. The Brit beat Venus on her way to success last year but has lost the last two meetings against the eighth seed.

Venus won a rollercoaster match against Kiki Bertens in the previous round to make it this far. She lost the opener from 5-0 up and would need to come from a break down in the decider to beat the Dutchwoman who failed to convert on three match point opportunities including two in succession. It’s definitely fair to say she thrives on the home fans who roared her on as she came back. “They were definitely on my side,” she stated. “It’s great to play at home and enjoy that support.”
“Konta totally seems on form, and both of us will be eager to advance, so I’ll do my best,” said Williams. Konta has looked impressive in Miami after a far from impressive start to the season. She has beat Belgians Kirsten Flipkens and Elise Mertens to get this far, the latter coming in a crushing 6-2 6-1 victory. “I think I did a reasonably good job at sticking to the plan, and trusting that when it was going to bring me opportunities, I wanted to make sure that I was not giving her an opportunity to play.” Konta said of the win, in which her opponent hit 26 unforced errors.
“The last few times I’ve played her, she’s played very well, and I haven’t beaten her,” Konta said. “I think it will be a great opportunity for me to play someone like her, to play such a great champion and a great player. I always look forward to playing her.”
Prediction – Venus Williams in three sets
