Venus Williams is looking to put the name Williams on the Indian Wells trophy for the first time since 2001 and now stands three matches away from doing so. She plays Carla Suarez Navarro for a spot in the semi finals with the winner of Angelique Kerber and Daria Kasatkina awaiting in the final four.

Venus never managed to make the final of the tournament in her early years prior to the boycott but is in with a big chance to do so this year. It’s been thoroughly professional stuff from her so far, with three straight sets wins including a big one over her sister Serena. She ensured there would be no comedown after that victory by beating Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets although the 9 double faults she served should come as somewhat of a concern. “It was not an easy match to figure out,” Venus said on court. “She has everything in her game. And it was a quick comeback from yesterday, where you have the emotions of, ‘Hey, this feels like a final! But guess what, you’re only in the fourth round.’”
A disappointing 2017 saw Suarez Navarro fall outside the top 40 for the first time since 2012 but she has bounced back this year with a quarter final in Melbourne and now this. Danielle Collins, outside the top 100, is not exactly the toughest opponent for a tournament of this calibre but her previous round win over Elina Svitolina deserves a lot of credit. She was broken just once by the Ukranian in the win and was always in control of the match against her higher ranked opponent.
After finally getting some wins to kickstart her season, Venus looks in confident form and should extend the head to head to 6-3. She is on a three match winning streak against her opponent, most recently winning in three at last year’s US Open.
