Kicking off the evening session Tuesday night on Arthur Ashe Stadium is a matchup that has the potential to be one of the best in the tournament, if both Venus Williams and Petra Kvitova are at their best. Two of the cleanest strikers on tour, the pair will fancy their chances of going all the way with tournament favourite Garbine Muguruza now out the picture. With Sloane Stephens favoured to win her semi final, Venus will be hoping to make it an all-American semi final with her victory.
Venus won a three setter in her previous matchup, closing out the third quickly to stop Carla Suarez Navarro from getting a foothold in the decider after the Spaniard had won the second. Meanwhile, Petra also defeated a more decorated Spaniard in the previous round. In the battle of Wimbledon champions, Kvitova shocked the pundits by sending the favourite out in straight sets. Statistically, it was far from a clean match with both players hitting 18 more unforced errors than winners. For Petra though, they came at the right time and she took charge of the match after winning the first in a tiebreak.
There’s no doubt that Petra’s game is better on slicker fast courts as shown by her results at Wimbledon and indoors where courts are playing more too her liking as well as losing the impact of weather. “I do feel that the courts are little bit faster maybe than the past years or last year.” she commented after her win. The weather in America has often done for Petra when it comes to her fitness too, with her struggling often during the tournament. Between favourable scheduling and kinder weather, it has been good for the Czech but she is still aware of the impact it can have. “I still sweated a lot actually tonight. And I thought would be a little bit cooler because from the morning was pretty rainy and everything. But so far I’m pretty lucky with the weather. I’m not complaining at all. I played some first rounds, then I played later in the day. I think the weather was good for me so far.”
“What she’s gone through is unimaginable, unreasonable. The world we live in is just shocking. So for her, I think to be playing well is such a blessing. To be able to come out here and do what she needs to do, to clear her head, it’s such a beautiful thing to see.” Venus said of her Kvitova, who has had to work hard to get back after the horrific injuries she suffered to her hand at the start of the year. It’s even more incredible to see her playing at a high level and now a legitimate title threat once again.
Prediction – Petra Kvitova in three sets
