The women’s draw being decimated by absences and struggles of the elite has made it tough for many popcorn matches to be thrown up between the rest of the top players but the match up between Garbine Muguruza and Kristina Mladenovic has the potential to be a thriller. Mladenovic has been one of the form players on the year and appears to now enjoy the big occasion while Muguruza is always dangerous as defending champion.

Muguruza was in trouble early against Yulia Putintseva in the last round but it turned out to be quite a routine victory for her, taking it 7-5 6-2 against the 27th seed. The energetic Kazakh could have made things interesting had she took the first but there was little of excitement following that as Muguruza’s grew in stature. “With each match my confidence is improving,” she said. “It’s important that each match I’ve played here has not been easy. I went out there without fear. I wanted the match, and I had to dictate the game.”
The Mladenovic of past years would probably have already been out of the tournament but she has fought through in two of the three matches so far. Shelby Rogers and Jennifer Brady probably shouldn’t be taking Mladenovic deep into the third set but Mladenovic has to be applauded for holding her nerve to win against them 8-6 and 9-7 respectively in front of an expectant crowd. ““You can say the crowd is amazing – it helps a lot. It’s tough for the opponent – but on another hand, you really have to handle that, nerves-wise and everything,” she said.
Mladenovic is seeking to become the first French Open Girls champion to win the senior title since Justine Henin and still has a major chance, especially if she can see off the defending champion in this match.
Prediction – Kristina Mladenovic in three sets
