Simona Halep

It has been fairly straight forward for Halep so far, winning both of her matches in straight sets. Although the Czech’s level has fallen in the past 12 months due to injury, breaking Lucie Safarova seven times in her 6-3 6-4 win was impresive. The Romanian has been in a rich vein of form since Wimbledon, going 15-1 since then. Her sole loss was to Angelique Kerber in the Cincinnati final, picking up titles in Bucharest and Montreal in the process.

World No.33 Babos is lucky to still be in the tournament after falling 4-1 down in the final set to young qualifier Barbara Haas in round one. She would come back to win 7-5 in the decider in the end but it was still a result that was surprising to see Babos tested so much.  Her second win over Richel Hogenkamp was more like what was expected of the Hungarian who will be glad to not be facing the ultra-fit Halep right after a lengthy match.

Halep is still heading for a quarter final match with Serena Williams the way things are going but her draw remains strong as it is with all 4 seeds playing round three in her block of the draw. The winner of the Carla Suarez Navarro and Elena Vesnina match awaits on Monday for the winner.

Prediction – Halep in straight sets
