Fifth seed Simona Halep looks to move on to the next round with what should be a fairly straight forward match against Francesca Schiavone. The match is scheduled third on court two so may have a tough time getting completed if rain strikes.
Since winning Rio in February, Schiavone has not had a good time at tour level with six losses out of her last nine and four in a row prior to her round one victory here. Losses to Mladenovic, Cibulkova and Safarova are nothing to be ashamed off but she will be disappointed by her one grass warmup match – a loss to Elise Mertens in Mallorca. Her win over Anastasija Sevastova actually came as somewhat of a surprise given the Latvian had a great run to the final in Mallorca herself.
Meanwhile, Halep had no trouble against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in her first match since the French Open – winning 6-4 6-1 showing no indications of the injury that kept her out of playing in any grass warm up events.
“My coach told me that it’s better to come here straight to practice. In my head I had that it’s better to play Eastbourne, but he said that it’s better to come here straight because the conditions are the same” Halep said in regards to her not playing any warmup events.
It’s likely Schiavone will not have enough to trouble Halep unless the Romanian puts in a disastrous performance but with Kiki Bertens a likely round three opponent, a tougher time may come on Friday.
Prediction – Simona Halep in straight sets
