Garbine Muguruza looks to continue to build on the success of her first grand slam title on Wednesday when she takes on Jana Cepelova in a match that hopes to beat the weather but will have a tough time being scheduled last on Court 2.
After the high of Roland Garros, Muguruza came crashing down in the new Mallorca Open with a straight sets loss to Kirsten Flipkens. It suggested that she might be prone for an upset in round one against an especially dangerous unseeded opponent in Camila Giorgi. The hard hitting Italian pushed the second seed all the way with Muguruza eventually coming out on top 6-4 in the third set.
Meanwhile, Cepelova is not a player who has ever thrived on grass which is why her victory over Simona Halep in round one last year came as a huge shock. However, she did look comfortable in qualifying with just 13 games lost in three qualifying matches. The Slovakian did make the top 50 in 2014 but now finds herself outside the top 100, playing mostly qualifiers and higher grade ITF tournaments in an attempt to make it back to an automatic slam qualifying rank.
Muguruza is under no illusions that a slow start can be damaging as illustrated by the Cepelova upset last year.
“Here you are in danger if you don’t go for it. I think it’s just more faster. You got be more concentrated. That ball, those three seconds can change the match. That would be it.” the Spaniard said.
Prediction – Muguruza in straight sets
