A matchup worthy of a round much deeper in the tournament than the second will take place when Agnieszka Radwanska goes up against Genie Bouchard at the Australian Open 2016 on Wednesday. After all, these are two former Grand Slam runner-ups (Radwanska reached the Wimbledon final in 2012 before Bouchard did the same in 2014). Check out the Bouchard vs Radwasnska Head to Head results.
Fast forward more than a year and both players have been victimized by a bad draw due to the fact that Bouchard is unseeded. The 21-year-old struggled through much of 2015 and just when it looked she was getting on track, she suffered a well-documented concussion by slipping in the U.S. Open locker room after reaching the fourth round. Bouchard played only one more match the rest of the season (Beijing in October) and it ended in retirement. The Canadian got through two warmup tournaments earlier this month, reaching the Shenzhen quarters and the Hobart final.
Bouchard punched her ticket into the second round of this tournament by Aleksandra Krunic 6-3, 6-4 on Monday. Radwanska downed Christina McHale 6-2, 6-3. The fourth-seeded Pole has won three consecutive events, including the prestigious year-end championship in Singapore last fall and Shenzhen earlier this month.
The only previous head-to-head meeting between these two competitors came on the clay courts of Madrid in 2014, when Radwanska prevailed 7-6(3), 6-2. This one may be more competitive, but the outcome should be the same. Radwanska’s current form is nothing short of outstanding, while Bouchard has not faced anyone better than No. 20 in the world since last May.
Prediction – Radwanska in three sets
