After compiling a 27-match unbeaten streak stretching back to 2014, Serena Williams suffered her first loss of the season in Madrid, where she defeated the likes of Sloane Stephens, Victoria Azarenka and Carla Suarez Navarro before losing to Petra Kvitova in the semi-final round. It was a lopsided victory for the Czech and showed the first chink in Williams’ armour this season. She went on to play one match in Rome before retiring ahead of her third round encounter against Christina McHale.
“I’m feeling better today. I’m just feeling more physically a lot better. Had a tougher time to get ready than I thought, but I have been doing a lot of cardio and getting myself ready in that aspect. Then I was able to play a little better today in practice. So I felt like, Oh, it’s better finally.”
The American will begin her campaign against Andrea Hlavackova, who qualified for the French Open following three wins in the qualifying round of the tournament. She beat Kristina Kucova, Alberta Brianti and Anastasia Rodionova to reach the main draw of the tournament.
This is just the second time that Williams and Andrea Hlavackova will cross paths on the professional tour, with Williams leading the head-to-head series 1-0. The American has only lost one encounter this year and is a dominant force that will unlikely be phased by her opening round task in Paris. Given Williams’ trajectory this season, she will likely perform better at Roland Garros than she did in 2014.
