Chelsea vs Manchester United: Preview and Prediction with Head to Head Stats

Chelsea v Man Utd

Both clubs will be looking to carry on their fine succession of good results, Manchester United tactically destroyed their closest rivals, Manchester City, last time out (4-2) whereas Chelsea scraped a very lucky win against their closest rivals, QPR (1-0). However, this game is a chance for Chelsea to show their haters, who claim they are a lucky, boring side who play negative football, why they should be Premier League Champions at the end of May and for United, it’s an opportunity to feel very secure in the top 4. Loic Rémy should return from a calf injury that ruled him out of the game against QPR whereas Diego Costa is fighting to be fit for next week’s game at the Emirates against Arsenal. Louis van Gaal, however, is without his central midfield pair of Daley Blind and Michael Carrick and centre backs Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones. Carrick’s absence could prove to be key in deciding who wins this game as Manchester United have won 12 and lost only 1 of the 16 games he has played in this season.

As Jonny Evans is suspended for spitting on Papiss Cissé, the Manchester club only have last week’s goal-scorer, Chris Smalling, and Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett available to play in the centre back position for today’s game.

Chelsea do seem in a perfect position to wrap up the title: they need three more wins, nine points to do so. Surprisingly, however, Chelsea are statistically underdogs for this game with United having won 43% of games at Stamford Bridge compared to Chelsea’s 31%. The Reds have averaged 1.74 goals per game played there whereas Chelsea have scored 1.49 on average per game against United in London.

I do see Mourinho setting his team up in a defensive way to ensure his team DO NOT lose. Van Gaal, a known tactician will probably match Chelsea’s counter attacking tactics to make sure his team aren’t vulnerable when Chelsea are on the break. I can see this game being a rather tentative affair with both teams settling for a point.

Match Prediction:
Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United
