The 2015 World Tennis Day was celebrated in memorable fashion in New York City on Tuesday night, as 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and Grigor Dimtirov met in a showdown at Madison Square Garden.
Dubbed ‘Baby Fed’ for his similar stylistic approach to Federer, Dimitrov took part in a fantastic match full of tweeners and riveting shot-making to secure a late 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 victory over the renowned champion.
”I have so much respect for him,” said the 11th-ranked Dimitrov.
It was Dimitrov’s first ever win over Federer, even though it will not get added to their professional head-to-head series, which Federer leads 3-0. However, the Swiss star was clearly impressed with Dimtirov, who rallied from a break down in the final set to beat Federer.
”I think he played very well. He did really well to turn the match around, honestly,” Federer said. ”So credit to him. It’s a lot of pressure – first time at the Garden.”
