For jus the second time on the professional tour, Agnieszka Radwanska and Irina-Camelia Begu will cross paths to determine a victor. The last time they met was in the second round of the Australian Open. Here, they will meet in the third round of the Miami Open in a match that could push Radwanska to a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head series.
Radwanska was pushed to the limit in the second set before she was able to defeat rising star Anna Schmiedlova 6-4, 7-5 in her second round match on Thursday. It was very close to becoming a three-set match, as Anna had several opportunities to force the decider but Radwanksa fended off each attempt to close out the match in the end.
“I’d never played against her, so I didn’t really know what to expect and of course she pushed me to play 100% at the end. I’m glad I could finish it in straight sets,” Radwanska said.
The Polish star will come up against the 31st seed Irina-Carneila Begu in the third round of the Miami Open. Begu was forced to rally from a set down before she summoned the strength to defeat Tereza Smitkova 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. It was an impressive performance but will certain put into question whether she has the energy for another grueling affair on Saturday.
This is just the second time that Radwanska and Begu will cross paths on the professional tour, with the Pole leading the head-to-head series 1-0. Her win took place in the second round of the Australian open back in 2013 and they have not met since. While Radwanska has not been herself so far this season, she should have little trouble in this contest and will find herself in the following round.
Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska in Straight Sets
