The French Davis Cup team has officially been selected, and although the competitors had a poor collective showing at the Paris Masters, the expected team remained intact for the final against Switzerland.
France captain Arnaud Clement selected four players – Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon to take part in the prestigious championship tie.
”I think about other players too, but in my mind today, those who have a chance of going on court in Lille are the four players I mentioned, and I want to focus the preparation on them,” Clement said at a news conference on Saturday.
”The players who had to stop because of injuries were able to play,” Clement said. ”They played good matches, and that was a good thing. I believe this is positive. Now that they are reassured about their condition, they can focus on the Davis Cup. It is their main goal.”
The collective effort of the French team at the Paris Bercy this year was disappointing, as no athlete was able to get past the third round on home soil. Gaquet, in particular, has had had a relatively week post-US Open run, where he won three matches in four tournaments and exited the Paris Masters in the second round.
”Richard is extremely motivated by this Davis Cup. He has his mind set on it,” Clement said. ”And I was very pleased with the level of Gael and Jo, also against players who are playing very well. They lost in the end, but I believe those matches were very interesting.”
The Davis Cup final is scheduled to take place in the northern city of Lille between Nov. 21-23.
