Following a pair of relatively smooth third round encounters, Tomas Berdych and Gilles Simon will cross paths for the ninth time on the ATP World Tour, with Simon leading the 5-3. Berdych won their most recent encounter, which took place last season in Bangkok.
Sixth seed Tomas Berdych defeated Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday afternoon to set up his quarter-final clash on Friday. The Czech No. 1 withstood 19 aces to topple the towering Croat in 1 hour and 5 minutes. The victory eases Berdych’s bid for the Barclays World Tour Finals, as he is only 45 points behind US Open champion Marin Cilic and will overtake the Croat if he defeated Simon in his forthcoming encounter.
France’s Gilles Simon faced a similarly smooth entry into the quarter-final round in Shanghai when he defeated the top-rankd Arab competitor Malek Jaziri in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 in 1 hour and 14 minutes. Simon hit 76% of his first service points and saved all three of the break points he faced on serve to earn the victory and advance to the final eight of the tournament.
This marks the ninth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Simon leading the series 5-3. The Frenchman, who is coming off a semi-final showing last week in Tokyo, is more than capable of a strong win here against his Czech adversary.
Prediction: Gilles Simon in Three Sets
